My husband failed to read instructions and signed his is blue ink.

We went through similar lack of clarity when we tried to get answers which contradicted eachother.

In the end we said we wanted confirmation in writing that it was valid. They wrote back and we got the same line - we consider it is valid but other countries might not. Helpful for a passport. We had to pay out for a new one.

Bottom line - be ultra careful with lines and BLACK ink.

And read the instructions 😉

We had issues with the online passport and the signatures. Luckily the passport office recognised it was a online fault and sorted it out quickly for us with no extra charge.

I do believe it also says on then actual passport to sign above the line. Its supposed to be in black but I have seen loads in blue and below the line and people have travelled with no problems. We would be told if it was a problem as we would have to deny them boarding.

What ever you do don't cross any signature out or sign again. As long as it is signed you should be fine. I haven't heard of any one being denied entry any where for signing below the line and Border Force at Glasgow don't bat an eyelid either.

The passport office will always say you need to have it signed above and in black to cover themselves.

Definitely doesn’t say sign above on passport but does so on a slip of paper which we overlooked. We did receive an email which was headed sign your passport now. This lead us to hastily sign. Upon opening the email it shows a link were you need to sign. The main thing for us is having everything correct. My child travels to the USA with the school. They even insisted on 6 months expiration on passport which is why we renewed early. Last thing I wanted was problems at immigration when we weren’t there.
Anyway new passport applied for and the money I saved last week rebooking our car rental has been used for this mistake. Swings and roundabouts

I just signed mine this morning - I went back to check Thankfully I signed above the line with a black pen! Just as well as I fly to Argentina in less than 48h!

Thanks for highlighting this, my new passport is due to arrive tomorrow so I'll be very careful signing it .

I was surprised in the application process that the new passport will need a manual signature - every other aspect is now high-tech yet here we are reverting to low-tech.

Excellent service overall though, I only applied last Sunday and my new passport was despatched today. Annoying that they no longer add on the unexpired time from the old passport - surely just a money grab? I'm not travelling until Aug and my old passport expires the week before travel so I have had to apply early to get my new ESTA. Lost 6 months off my passport purely due to red-tape and the Passport Office not adding on the time

We feel the same. One of our passports runs out mid September and we travel a month later. Had to renew as Esta had to be done. Wasn’t chancing any esta problem , but peeved lost all those months

How else would they get your signature?
