Anybody had cellulitis?
Ended up taking dh to a&e yesterday and they said he has cellulitis.
Had iv antibiotics and fluids and sent away with more antibiotics. It was early hours when we left and we were so tired we didn’t think to ask too many questions. The swelling and pain in his ankles is so bad that he can’t get out of bed, how long would you think it should take for the antibiotics to take hold and see an improvement? They were concerned about the possibility of early signs of sepsis so I’m keeping a close eye on him but not really sure what I’m looking for. Any advice would be great. |

I haven't, but my son did when he was ~9 months old. Kudos to my eagle-eyed wife for catching it. Same spot too - one of his ankles.
He was admitted overnight (two nights actually) due to his young age. Hooked up to antibiotics via IV. After 24 hours they did the trick and the cellulitis retreated fairly quickly. Give your DH at least 24 full hours on the antibiotics and see if he turns the corner. Once they kick in, it will hopefully clear up rapidly. Speedy recovery! |

Yes, my husband got bitten by a Brown Recluse spider in Florida in 2016 and developed cellulitis. He ended up admitted into hospital for 5 days on a cocktail of strong IV antibiotics and still has the scarring to this day. It's not something to mess around with so if you have any concerns then definitely seek advice (they were talking about leg amputations and all sorts when my husband was first admitted - holiday from hell! ).
It sounds it has been caught a bit quicker in your husbands case (my husband ironically is a nurse and you can't tell him anything, he kept saying 'it's just a rash', which I, of course, bring up regularly! ) , so hopefully a couple of days of antibiotics and he will feel much better.

Thanks all.
I’m hoping they’ve caught it early and he’ll be feeling better soon. Dh is phobic of hospitals so would rather pretend there’s nothing wrong than admit he needs to see a doctor. I wanted to take him to a&e on Sunday but he refused, wish I’d stood my ground now. |

My brother-in-law was bitten by something during a week in the New Forest and got cellulitis and he was VERY ill. He was in hospital for 8 weeks and the infection spread fermi his ankle to half way up his thighs. I’ve never seen anything like it! Ther was talk that if it went any further there may be amputation!
I think the hospital should have drawn round it to see if tippet is spreading - keep a very beady eye on it and if it gets worse, straight back to the hospital.

I had it on my leg when I was pregnant with my youngest. Though it didn’t feel like it at the time, it would seem I got off quite lightly. Just oral antibiotics and after a couple of weeks it had gone.
Fingers crossed that your DH is on the mend soon. |

If you phone NHS direct they will happily answer your questions. Hope your husband gets better soon.
