1956 - the world air speed record was set at 1,132 mph by Lt Cdr Peter Twiss OBE DSC & Bar RNVR flying from Boscombe Down in a Fairey Delta 2 between Chichester and RNAS Ford in Sussex.Twiss became the first man to fly over 1,000 mph.

There were and still are 2 x Fairey Delta 2’s. It was a shame that when it was decided to heavily modify one of the two with an ogive wing in order to carry out research on the Concorde project, they trashed the one that Twiss used to break the World Speed record.

The aircraft of Twiss is now at Yeovilton, next to a Concorde.

The aircraft identical to the one that Twiss used is now in the ‘experimental hall’ at the RAF Museum, Cosford.
