Holiday curtailment ( Madeira)

Hi
We flew to Funchal on Saturday 14th with BA.
Got to hotel to be advised that a lot of island may be going into shut down,but as yet hotel and restaurants all open as usual. We went out for dinner,bought some drinks and went back to hotel.
Reception called us to say that from Sunday m8dnight,hotel was on lock down and as we landed before we could leave as long as we had boarding passes to prove .
We went to reception and discussed. They informed us that the decision had been made while we were in air, and now a bill had been passed that madeira was in lock down and they were waiting on airport closing.
We booked with BA. No reps and all numbers busy.
We went online and booked a BA flight home on Monday.
We spoke to others who were also advised to leave with TUI,easyJet etc.
Who do I contact for some compensation as it cost us £500 to return home.
BA are offering vouchers. But that’s if you need to cancel. We had to leave as it was getting serious. Our other option was to stay and ride it out. However that wasn’t an aption.

Have you tried your travel insurance? BA did actually supply what they where supposed to do and you did not wait for BA to arrange a flight home. All BA is likely to do is refund you for the unused flight home, the rest you will have to claim on your travel insurance.
