Religion became actively disliked by me when I joined the Army and was made to stay on barracks every 4th Sunday weekend for Church Parade. We were marched up in uniform, then marched back. You could refuse to enter if an atheist in and stand outside, in file and stood at ease, rain or shine, wrecking your no2 dress uniform and it’s creases in the event of rain and necessitating hours of reparative work afterwards..

I have absolutely nothing against those who do believe. I just hated the fact that in my formative years, I had no choice. This moved me in belief from Agnostic to Atheist.

In Weddings/Funerals I stand silent for both Prayers and Hymns. I would never kneel down.

On Remembrance Day, I do attend the memorial whilst the service is held. That is out of respect for the people who gave their lives and doubtless (from its time), what they would have mainly wanted. Again, no singing and silence on ‘amens’.

The question was asked and answered. That is my explanation why.
Not quite sure why you are so against religion, the army made you stand outside, not the church!
The question was actually do your children pray, 'no' would have been sufficient.
Each to their own at the end of the day.

No.

Apparently 'no' isn't sufficient, not enough letters to please the DIBB

Of course the vicar could have objected!

As for the for against. I can’t quite see why you are so clearly ‘for’ religion. I actually stated that I have nothing against those who believe in my earlier post.

As you said... each to their own.

Yes, that was the one we said, used to frighten me too!

My ‘kids’ are grown up now, but would say a little prayer after bedtime stories, ‘ God bless Granny, God Bless Grandpa’ etc. And little prayers they learnt at school.

There is a modern day version of this, I remember DS’s LSA whispering to me ‘I HATE this bit’ when it got to the darker verse. There is dark stuff in the world eg Coronavirus, but you don’t want your little ones drifting off to sleep focusing on it.
‘Jesus, Lord, I come to say
Thank you for your love today
Thank you for my family
And all the friends you give to me
Guard me in the dark of night (scary bit)
And in the morning send your light’
Amen

I like the opening lines though.

My Sister and I were made to back in the 1950's.

Don't think it lasted that long, maybe until we were 6 or 7 but can't remember.

Our Children never did as neither of us are religious.

Same here. I was brought up RC...forced upon me (scary Latin masses and scary priests) but I lost my faith when it was severely tested in harrowing times and there were no real answers.
Each to their own though ... when you consider what issues religion has caused over the years I’m glad I’m now out of it tbh.

I did as a child, lit candles the lot. Ours was
Gentle Jesus meek and mild
Look on me a little child
Pardon my simplicity
And fit me to come to thee.

We all had a religious picture over our beds too.

Did none of that with my children.

We had this one too and I was also really creeped out by it. When we were older we moved on to the Lord's Prayer. I continued this well into adulthood but hated the days when Mum or grandparents used to insist on "hearing our prayers". I know they felt they were doing the right thing and thought it was special to us. In reality I found it intrusive. My Dad never did it. I've never done it with my kids.
