Speed Cameras in England

We’ve been in England for a few days, just on our way back to Gatwick in a hire car. There was a definite flash on the M3 from a speech camera - not sure if it was us or someone else, but hubby said he was going between 75 and 80 so definitely possible

Obviously if a ticket comes it will be via the hire car company, and I’d like to understand how things work if it does come, as it’ll no doubt be me who is left to deal with it.

It seems it’s not a flat fine but a % of income - how does that work? Do you have to supply payslips or something? We’re outside the UK so we can’t have points imposed, our tax etc records can’t be accessed and we can’t be compelled to provide any documents (not saying we wouldn’t voluntarily provide), so this is all new.

Hubby needs to learn to respect speed limits... he got pulled in Canada last year

Any help appreciated.

I have recently attended a speed awareness course. They told us most courses will offer a course if the recorded speed is 10% plus 9 points over
Not sure if this would be viable with you being in IOM

Na, it’d be cheaper to pay the fine than travel to a course, and they can’t add points to an IOM driving licence.

Over here you now attend the course at a centre of your choice rather than one in the county of the police force so I wonder if there could be a possibility of you having a designated centre over there?
Wait and see what they suggest!

We don’t have a speed awareness course here - it’s EFPN or Court. We will wait and see. He’s saying it was for the guy in the outside lane, not him, but I’m not convinced.

If it’s a flat fine I can live with that, it was all the business about % of income which was worrying me.

Whereabouts on the M3 was it? We were coming back from my SILs in Winchester going towards J1 Sunbury when my OH got flashed (about the same speed as you) but we haven’t had anything come through. This was just after Christmas

I honestly can’t remember. We were going from Southampton to Gatwick, but that’s all I know - I wasn’t paying much attention.
