Except soaps aren't "everyday tales of normal life". Far from it. And they're not supposed to be. They are fictional over-the-top dramas that have very little relationship to "normal life". Which is one of the reasons why they are so popular - people like a bit of escapism.

If they were everyday tales of normal life then they'd be pretty boring and very few people would watch them.

Eastenders is probably one of the most extreme examples but also seems to be one of the most successful. Which perhaps gives you an insight into the viewing public's mind.
