Total novice!
Is it feasible to either (a) stay at a Tokyo Disney hotel and visit the city or (b) stay in the city and visit Disney?
I've looked at maps but have no idea how far away they actually are from each other. I'm wondering if 'Tokyo Disney' is like saying 'London Luton' |

Oh, also, how easy is it to get to Universal Studios from Tokyo?

I'd split your time between Tokyo and TDR. It's easy enough to get to the parks from the city but it's still a 15-30 minute journey every day each way, if you are doing multiple days at the parks then just stay near Disney for those days. There are lots of "official hotels" on the disney monorail loop (Hilton etc) as well as Disney hotels (mega expensive!). There's also some very close hotels 1 train stop away, we stayed at Oriental Tokyo Bay, much cheaper than the monorail loop hotels for us and 3 minutes on the train.
Universal is in Osaka, about a 3 hour train ride away on the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo. It's about £100 ish train ticket so if you are set on doing Osaka/Kyoto area too then look at flying into or out of Osaka or possibly looking at the Japan Rail Pass. You'd need to factor in extra days for this then too obviously. Highly recommend Looking at TDRexplorer.com to research your trip

When we went to Tokyo a few years back we used the Sheraton Tokyo Bay (one of the hotels on the Disneyland monorail loop) as a base. Essentially, I found at that time that I could either pay for a hotel in the city centre with smaller rooms, or pay the same price for the Sheraton Tokyo Bay which had huge rooms, so decided to just spend the whole 5 night trip at the Sheraton Tokyo Bay.
We spent 2.5 days in the Tokyo city centre. It was maybe around 45 minutes to get there from the Sheraton Tokyo Bay. Basically, from the hotel, we took the monorail to Maihama station, then took a train from Maihama station into the city centre. There are many trains and it was a very easy trip for us. I guess an analogy would be staying in a hotel in maybe Zone 3-6 of London and going into London city centre?

When we return we will be stopping at disney area hotel for tokyo phase. The rooms are larger and no matter where you stop you generally need to use a train anyway.
