We have booked the Travelodge for our return and paid £10 extra to check in at noon, we figured by the time we have come through immigration, and add some breakfast it will be about 11 am anyway we are staying in london, but you could maybe drive for an hour then check in to one on the way home.

Since moving up to the north east we have flown from London 3 times and do the train each time... It's far too long a drive! We have a two together rail card and I check daily for when the reduced price tickets are released. We can usually get return tickets Durham to London for under £100 for the two of us. My bargain tickets were £20 for both of us one way for one hour way though! Getting across London is just one train or one underground, depending on which airport. It's a long journey, but that's our choice for doing the cheaper and direct flights from London. There is no way we would consider driving it!

Not all hotels resell the rooms. My parents recently flew into MAN with a 23:30 arrival time - when I took them to the airport I dropped them off at the Radisson Blu so they could tell them about their late arrival back to the UK 6 days later. They were told "we are a 24hr hotel linked to an airport - no need to tell us about late arrivals".
Similarly, if you book a Premier Inn and pre-pay the booking, they don't resell the room. I've "no-showed" on pre-paid Premier Inn bookings in the past & still get the check-in email - i.e. they have checked me in, in my absence, as the booking was pre-paid. I'd put good money on it that even a no-show on a flexible (i.e. pay on arrival) Premier Inn booking would just see your credit card charged for the cost of the booking if you failed to turn up. |

After a nightmare drive from Manchester after an Orlando flight a few years ago we always travel to the airport night before by train and train straight back.
This year I use £10 of clubcard points for 2 together railcard which saved us around a third off the train price.

Another vote for the train. W are in the North East and usually use Manchester Airport. If you book the advance ticket about 12 weeks out , prices usually cheaper than driving, petrol, parking fees.
After writing of my car one year falling asleep 1 mile from home, would not consider for a moment driving after a long haul flight |

We have a 3 hour drive back from Gatwick - but I always do it straight after landing as we are always keen to get home.
Bit of a slog near the end but not too bad usually.
