Ramipril and coughing
I have been on Ramipril (high blood pressure) for some time now. I used to have the side effect of dry coughing but that went. Now a few years later it is back. For various reasons that I wont go into, Doc wont change the medication and has said hopefully the cough will go and give it a few months.
That is all well and good but it is driving me crazy. Can't go out for a meal or to cinema without this cough disturbing everyone. Luckily once I am asleep it doesn't wake me up but during the day drives me crazy.. Has anyone else that takes Ramipril had the cough, if so was there anything you did that helped? Thanks |

I am on Amlodipine and Lisinopril.
Sad to say coughing is a side effect for Ramipril and Lisinopril. However there are other tablets that don't have this effect so I would push the GP if it's really annoying. Plus heavy coughing is bad for your health. The more common side effects that occur with Ramipril include: dizziness or faintness due to low blood pressure. cough. dizziness. chest pain. nausea. vomiting. diarrhea. weakness or tiredness. What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Lisinopril? dizziness. cough. headache. high potassium levels. diarrhea. low blood pressure. chest pain. fatigue.

I’m sorry to hear that CrochetFreak. I was on Rampiril for a while, like you I suffered with the cough. In my case though I had to come off it, and swap to another medication.

Yes I had this!
I was on ramipril for around 2 years and ended up with a cough, the coughing got so bad it was constant throughout the day, numerous visits to the doctors I saw a few different ones who gave different advice such as don’t have more than 3 boiled sweets a day as the saliva collects at the back of the throat! Another was take sips of water when you get the urge to cough, I couldn’t work for 5 weeks as I was coughing constantly Finally a doctor put me on a cough suppressant medicine I was sent to ent who then said I need an exploratory throat operation, I had this had to stay in overnight just to check they hadn’t purforated anything! After all this they said it’s the ramipril ... they put me on another bp tablet but that made my legs swell up ! Now I’m on amlipdopine that so far hasn’t had any side effects Go and see another gp get your meds changed insist on it and also get the cough suppressant Edited at 05:37 PM. |

Any ACEi can cause a cough, I would be asking to be swapped to Losartan which is A2RB a different type of BP medication often used where ACEi isn’t tolerated

Thanks everyone for comments. It is the specialist who is telling GP to keep me on Ramipril, which apparently aids kidney function and as I only have one kidney, he wants me to stay on it. I am also on Lercandipine for high blood pressure. This is why GP says give it time to see what happens. They really don't want me to reduce the Ramipril.
I am seeing the renal guy in a couple of weeks for my annual check up, so will push him to do something about it even if he just allows me to reduce the dosage (am on max dosage at the moment). I can't really blame the GP as she is just following his instructions. |
