Best time to book car hire?

I've always had a package with Virgin but going DIY for 1st time.
Priced up with Virgin for next October Mustang with gold insurance for 15 days is £728.
Direct with Alamo is £556 including gold & I can get 11% back through topcashback.
Do prices change a lot with car hire or is it best to book early?
I haven't booked flights yet so dates could change slightly which is holding me back from booking.
How easy is it to cancel or amend booking with Alamo?
Thanks

I think you need to take the cash back out of the equation just in case you cancel. In your situation i would book with Alamo Brits and thus get the 10% discount from the off. You can ammend and or cancel easilly enough
However, ammending by a day or two can bring in a whole new price so that may not be benficial.

Thanks Tom for your reply, I priced up with Alamo Brits & it was £20 more than Alamo, without the cashback.

I could book & if I have to cancel & rebook will just have to accept new price!
All depends on reward flights so anything could happen!
Is it easy to cancel?

Ha ha. I was in the Reward flight scenario as well. I just added our return leg a week ago.

As for cancelling yes it's easy. I paid by Amex for a rental 2 years ago and cancelled it (Brits). The refund appeared in 4 days.

Try discount Florida car hire as well as they are considerably cheaper than Alamo Brits/Virgin etc, for our dates next year.

Hit and miss for me. I can never get them cheaper. But, I have to say they are very good so always worth a look.

Yeah, always worth a quick browse. Auto Europe were the best for me this year (others were more than double in cost), but DFCH are ~£200 cheaper than Brits for me at the mo.

I tried Alamo Brits again & its now £100 cheaper! Don't know what I did before!
So does Alamo Brits include all insurance, no need to add anything, except fuel at check in?

Thanks
