You do not need a code for the USA.

As above you do not need the DVLA code.
See this From VH website car hire section

Alamo in the USA and Canada, Avis in South Africa, Drive-a-matic in Barbados, St Lucia and Antigua, and Thrifty in New Zealand and Australia, will require to see a valid plastic photocard. Customers DO NOT need to provide a DVLA print out of their endorsements prior to travel. (old style paper licences are only valid if you do not hold a photocard).

This is the same for all the car hire companies.

Hiya Craig - concur with 7Seas and PPM... US law enforcement/hire car suppliers don't recognise UK driving penalties hence a DVLA code is superfluous. Also check photo dl expiry dates as they must be renewed every 10 years. Renewal can easily be done online if your pp is under 5 years as the DVLA utilise the databased photo.

Note, if your UK dl is in English you don't require an IDP (International Driving Permit). All you'll require is a photo dl or the older style paper dl with pp as additional photo ID. The photo card dl counterpart paper became defunct June 2015.

Have a smashing holiday Craig

As already said above NO code required for rentals in the USA
The new style UK driving licence just has a photo card (no paper part). In the USA this is accepted with no need to get a 'Code' which is required for European rentals only.

If you have the old pink style paper-only type license, this is fine too, although you may be asked for photo ID (in which case present your passport).
