We stayed at the Monterey plaza hotel and spa. It was just amazing and worth the splurge. Our daughter really enjoyed sitting on the balcony watching the dolphins and sea otters play in the bay ( ocean view room) The hotel was quiet even in August, great restaurant and service. Our only regret was not staying longer.

Harbor View Inn in Santa Barbara. Great location over the road from the pier.
Visited Monterey but stayed in the next town; Carmel, The Lamplighter Inn. |

Monterey bay inn and west beach inn are my recommendations

Given the choice, stay in Carmel rather than Monterrey itself.

Sorry to jump in but would Pacific Grove be an ok place to stay to visit Monterey, 17mile drive etc. Thanks.

We have just strayed at the hotel pacific very nice, breakfast ish and $20 dollar parking.Portola hotel looked very, very nice...

Thank you for all your replies, we've now booked Monterey Plaza!
Harbour View Inn in Santa Barbara looks really nice. We've also looked at West Beach Inn, does anyone have any experience of that one?

We also stayed at Brisas Del Mar in Santa Barbara - short safe walk to beach and pier. Nice hotel.

We stayed at the Monterey Bay Inn a fortnight ago and would highly reccomend it.. right in the action with the only noise being the Sealions in the morning! Very convenient also for Fishermens Wharf and the Whale Watching.
