Having a Whale of a Time Introduction - Disney Wonder Alaska 2013

Welcome to our Alaska cruise trip report from August 2013 – yes, it’s nearly a year late (more on that later!) but better late than never!

Here we are – Alison and Nigel (both teachers) and Stephen, aged 13 at the time of travelling.

We are die-hard Disney and photography fans who, over the last couple of years, have discovered a new love in cruising! We added on a 3 day cruise to our Disney trip in August 2011 and, despite being hit by Hurricane Irene so we never even made it to Castaway Cay, we were sucked in and booked a dummy cruise on board. We then returned over Easter in 2012 on a rather last-minute whim, where we had the most wonderful five day double-dip cruise, including two visits to Castaway Cay!

From our very first trip, I had drooled over the information about the Alaska cruise but they were setting sail from Seattle and flights were absolutely prohibitive. I still kept the dream alive, though and, once we had our dummy cruise booked after our Easter cruise, we kept a careful watch, as the Wonder was now sailing from Vancouver.

Eventually, after juggling various things, this dream became a reality! We ended up getting a reasonable deal on flights with Air Canada, decided to fly direct to Vancouver and to splash out on a night at the gorgeous Pan Pacific hotel. With hindsight, we should have made the most of our trip to Canada with a few days in beautiful Vancouver at one end of the trip but we were so focused on Alaska, we didn’t really think of that (and finances were pretty tight, too!)

Anyway, that’s just a quick note on how this trip came about. As I mentioned before, we are both keen photographers and were so looking forward to having the opportunity to capture the beautiful Alaskan scenery and, hopefully, some wildlife. Previously, I have always written the trip reports but, this year, Nigel announced he was going to write the trip report and began making notes on his iPad. Fantastic! Except – that was as far as it got. He sorted out all the photos and wrote the first day or so but never got any further than that! After several ‘discussions’ on the matter where he insisted he would do it, we got to where we are now! So here it is – our photo-heavy Alaskan trippie, written by both of us!
