You can also be boarded first, which means they are entering a near empty plane ... which helped enormously.

I believe some families send half on first with cabin bags etc, then the carer plus adhd child boards last, which meant least possible time actually required to be sat in seats!

I didn’t know this. Phoned ba up and they refunded the cost of our seat booking and kept the seats we had chosen.
I wish I had known this before... we have paid out so much over the years!

Yes, just phone customer service, or email them. They sorted it very quickly.

I usually sit him on the seat behind me, and next to his brother; that way he can't kick anyone else or pull on their chair; also I can recline my seat without worries, apart from last year, when a stewardess asked me to sit upright so the lad behind me wasn't squashed... I paid for his seat! and you've never said that to anyone squashing me!
We haven't had any issues getting our seats allocated for free, you can usually jump the queue for boarding, but I prefer to hang back until nearer the end of boarding.

Virgin were very funny with s this time and said they would only book seats for me and my son free and the others would have to pay. I sidestepped this person and spoke to someone on livechat who kindly booked them all.
This is what VA told me:

Virgin Atlantic have charged for seat assignments for over two years however we are able to waiver the seat charge for a passenger with Autism plus one other passenger to be seated with them.

During the transition period we may have waivered the seat charge for more than two passengers in a booking however this would have been as a good will gesture which we are unable to continue. To remain fair and consistent to all passengers we are only able to waiver the seat charges for Corey and one other passenger. If you do not wish to pay for seat assignments for the remaining passengers in your booking they will be able to allocate their seats free of charge at check in or 72 hours prior to departure if they are flying club members.

We never had a problem with virgin last year and they booked seats for my son and both me and my husband, maybe it depends on who you talk to.
