I'd stop for a birthday pint at the Hog's Head rather than try for a special occasion meal there. Cosy and atmospheric. If with kids, they can have a butterbeer. I too have been underwhelmed by the food and the noise at The Three Broomsticks and The Leaky Cauldron, but if you can find an off-peak time and look for a quiet table, it's fun to sit for a while and take in the details.
