Not sure, would it not be better to wait till you are there and then buy one?

Yes, you would. Why not buy one at home and buy US maps for it online? Alternatively as lindylou says buy when you get there (1st night in Walmart or similar). I'd prefer have it in advance though as you can familiarise yourself with the settings etc.

Have a look on EBay. I picked up a 3 week old Garmin with US maps for about £45 back in 2012 and have bought an SD card with UK and Europe maps to use at home for around £20.

we have a UK TomTom with US maps on it--like to have it for when we land and in all the times we have been it has been very useful

I have a TOMTOM app on my iphone which works great in the UK - last time we went to Florida I bought the USA version, from home to take with me. It's perfect and actually much more reliable than a dedicated satnav machine, that always seems to break down at a crucial moment!

we got one from ebay but ended up just using phone apps , lots of free one available and just download to use off line before you go but make sure you have a usb lead and phone charger as they can eat the batteries
