Tourin' Over California 2017 - Day 7 Whale Watching and Drive to Pismo Beach

19 July

Breakfast was included at the hotel and we ate at one of the 2 tables in Red Roof lobby. There was not much choice, - 2 cereals, porridge, toast, some pastries, and juice & coffee machines. We all took anti sickness tablets ready for our whale watching trip that morning.

We put the bags in the car and drove to Moss Landings. We missed the turn off as I had only put zip code in sat nav instead of full address. Megan put full address in and then we doubled back and found it. We passed a sea otters crossing sign which we found quite amusing!

We parked right near the entrance as advised.

When it came time to check in for the trip we were told that Megan should have been an adult and that we would have to pay extra but we were never asked for it. I think it helped as another family also had 2 teenagers who they had classed as children- it was not clear from the website what age a child is before they are classed as an adult.

There were also a couple with 2 small children who were told that the younger child could not board he was under 5. The mum took the child away while dad took the older boy on board.

There were not enough wrist bands for everyone, Megan and Tracey managed to get 2 old ones that needed taping on – we were still charged $7 for each.

It was a cloudy misty morning and we sat at the front of the boat. We saw sea otters which were about the size of sea lions (all of a sudden the road sign made sense) and sea lions in harbour.

We were not far out of the harbour when we saw first Humpback whales. As we went further out to sea found lots more humpbacks.

At first the views were like this

But later we got closer views like this.

Tracey was seasick when the boat stopped and we were just bobbing on ocean. We moved in and saw some risso dolphins and sun fish. We also saw more sea lions.

We saw more whales on the way back, including these two really close to boat, Tracey just wanted to get off

We got back at 1.30 and set the sat nav for Bixby Bridge and set off along highway1 for Big Sur

We stopped at the bridge to get photos and then as PCH was closed further along at that time we doubled back to take highway 101 to Pismo.

We stopped off briefly at Camp Roberts, a rest area on 101 to get a drink and use the bathroom.

We arrived at Sandcastle Hotel Pismo Beach, it was a really nice room with view of beach from balcony, it was our favourite hotel of the holiday and was a pity we only had one night there.

We went out along front to get food and ended up at Wooly’s, where you queued outside, order on way in and then find a table with order number that you had been given. Tracey and I had Philly cheesesteak, Megan chicken tenders. We had a side of onion rings and drinks which all came to €45 and the food was really nice.

We walked back along the beach, and I was determined that I had to paddle in the Pacific Ocean, joined by Megan.

We got back to the room, all had showers and posed for photos with Pismo Beach robes on.

This was when we noticed in the photos from earlier that we hadn't actually gone as far as Bixby Bridge - ah well, can't go back now - will have to come again

Day 8 here
