Travel Insurance.

Hi,

We travel on the 9th Dec and have had our travel insurance in place since we booked in July.

Over the weekend at a routine opticians appointment my daughter was found to have inflammation around her optic nerve. We saw an eye specialist on Tuesday who found everything to be fine in terms of her eye health and vision with the exception of this inflammation.

She is due to have a MRI scan, hopefully before the trip but if not on our return to investigate what might be going on.

I rang our insurance company to inform them of this development and this condition is now excluded from her cover.

I'm not too sure what I expected them to say?!? I think I thought they would still cover it but ask for an extra premium..

I have no reason to think that this eye problem will give us any problems whilst we are away but I really don't like the idea of not being covered...

Do I have any options at this point?

Thanks.

Ali.

They have excluded it because you have informed them that there is a problem which has not been properly diagnosed therefore they cannot make a satisfactory risk assessment.

Until the OP has the results back from the scan it is unlikely anyone will cover them if they disclose the condition - not disclosing it is fraud and if you need to claim will see any and all claims null and void if discovered - so rock and hard place really

They can't charge an extra premium without knowing exactly what is going on, it would be a roll of the dice for them. this condition usually doesn't cause too many problems and often rectifies itself quite quickly needing no treatment but sometimes treatment is needed. It can leads to vision loss though and require steriod treatment which would be costly whilst in the states.

A risk factor for this condition is high altitude.

As in flying?

Anyway, can't believe how naive I was in terms of thinking they would cover an undiagnosed condition... absolutely makes sense that they wouldn't.

We have now arranged a private MRI scan for tomorrow morning, we will see the consultant with the results on Wednesday morning at which point we will hopefully have some clarity on how we move forward.

Thanks for all your replies today - appreciated.

No idea of how you stand on insurance, i hope te scan results are fine for you to enjoy your holiday. My DD had problems with her optic nerve, but was not affected by high altitude/flying. X

I would have thought that as long as you had the insurance in place before the condition became apparent and the holiday already booked that this would be covered. We had a similar thing earlier this year ,holiday all booked and DW diagnosed with gallstones and awaiting surgery, gave insurance a call and they said it was covered as the holiday was booked before she had any problems.

The problem appears to be that although we know she has swollen optic nerves we do not yet know why. She was due an MRI on the NHS to investigate but this would not have been done in time for us to get the results before the holiday...

We have booked the private MRI for tomorrow, follow up on Weds and see where we go from there. If nothing else it will save my daughter worrying for the next 4-6 weeks about what her problem may or may not be...
