Reef, Rivers & Rainforests – Australia - September/October 2018 - Day 2 - Stockholm & flight to Doha
Day 2 – Sunday 23rd September 2018 (Stockholm – and flight to Doha)
Reef, Rivers and Rainforests – September/October 2018 Link to trip report index – including pre trip report: Here Feeling quite well rested we both woke up at a reasonable time, lounged around a bit in the room with tea and coffee and then made our way down to the breakfast room (breakfast buffet was included in the price). My goodness, it was HUGE! By far the biggest breakfast buffet area I’ve ever seen, for some bizarre reason it even had a new Volvo XC40 next to the seating area. As mentioned, the selection of food went on and on and included cereals, pastries, hot items and an omelette station, cooked to order. There was the usual mixed bag of clientele with a number of European accents here but there was a group of men in uniform with the word Brandsoldat embroidered on. I had to look it up before confirming that for some reason the local Fire Brigade ate here in the mornings. Fully filled up on all the goodies on offer we packed ready for the day, checked out and dropped the rest of our luggage with the reception desk to hold for the day and headed out into town. Previously, we’d taken the train, the Arlanda Express which is very quick but expensive at 570 SEK (£48) each. As we’d been to Stockholm before we weren’t in a rush so instead we took the Flygbussarna Airport Coach at 215 SEK (£18 return). Slower but still comfortable, air-conditioned and free wi-fi and much cheaper. Our first stop was at Espresso House for a coffee, cinnamon bun (about £15 total) and a toilet break. If it’s one thing Stockholm does have it’s a multitude of independent coffee shops. We lingered over our drinks and considered what to do as we’d been here before and practically exhausted everything we wanted to do here before. If it was blazing hot then I’d probably consider going for a swim somewhere but not at this temperature. It's really quite picturesque here, so we wandered around for a while taking in the sights. Before I’d left someone at work said they’d been impressed with the Vasa Museum so we thought it was worth a short trip out. Well, on TripAdvisor it was No.1 of 272 things to do in Stockholm so couldn’t be that bad surely? We walked through to Djuegarden, bought tickets for the museum (£13 each) and were pleasantly surprised at just how good the museum was although there’s an awful lot of reading if you want the full story. In a nutshell, the Vasa ship capsized and sank in Stockholm 1628. After 333 years on the sea bed the warship was salvaged, a bit like our Mary Rose. Today, Vasa is the worlds only preserved 17th century ship and the most visited museum in Scandinavia. We spent a while here, marvelling at the boat before becoming “museumed out” and stepping out into the park again, going past the ABBA museum and small theme park. For the music fans the Concert Hall was just across the way. This was the stage on January 9, 1969 for the Jimi Hendrix Experience. This was the televised event that really didn’t go to plan and was unceremoniously ended at 9pm. Anyway, we moved on and the sun was very bright and low in the sky and we grabbed a quick snack before arriving back at the bus stop to take us back to the airport and our hotel. Luckily for us we managed to snag the last two seats on the 17:50 service. Once back at the hotel we retrieved our luggage and spent a little time re-packing to spread the load before taking the short walk to the Qatar Airways check-in desks to get rid of our bags. Security was pretty slick although there weren’t many passengers about at this time of night and we then settled ourselves in the Aviator Lounge for some pre-boarding drinks and snacks. A small IKEA style lounge, nice and quiet apart from a Bill Nighy lookalike who was shouting at his iPhone whilst Face Timing his wife, a bit inconsiderate really! Near us was a younger chap who kept sniffing, sneezing and coughing. We hoped that neither of them were on our flight! When boarding was called I think we were the last people in the lounge before it closed for the night. We headed to the gate and as we sat down – who was next to us but coughing man from the lounge! Ah well – it happens, but at least we wouldn’t see him again after boarding. Or would we? We boarded the plane when we were called and settled into our seats (2A and 3A – both window seats) with a nice glass of champagne and a hot towel to freshen up, and the menu for the flight. We were just in the process of being offered pyjamas when we heard a familiar sound – cough, cough, cough! Yep – there he was just a few seats away! Hopefully a few glasses of something alcoholic and some earplugs will block him out! We love Qatar business class – amazing service, food and drink – and we get tier points for our British Airways status! We didn’t eat much as it was quite late – just got as much sleep as we could and watched some films in between. Well, that’s what Alison did – she couldn’t see me behind her trying a few of the cocktail options! Next stop – Doha! Transport count (this will be a running total!): Flights: 2 Trains: 2 Tubes: 1 Ubers/Taxis: 1 Coaches/Buses: 2 Step Count today: 16644 Total step count for the trip: 24792

You always organise your time so well!
I like the sound of the breakfast buffet! And the cinnamon bun looks delicious!

Ha Ha - Years of "Commando" planning!
A bit of a "Bus man's" holiday with two Project Managers organising things although most of it is down to Alison's expertise.
