Reef, Rivers & Rainforests – Australia - September/October 2018 - Day 4 - Doha to Adelaide

Day 4 – Tuesday 25th September 2018 – Doha to Adelaide

Now – where were we? Ah yes, finally on the last leg before we get to Australia!

We’d taken off, changed into pyjamas and settled down for something to eat. Alison had the afternoon tea, followed by the sticky toffee pudding and a So Jennie mocktail. I had chicken kabsia and the sticky toffee pudding. My notes get a bit sparse from here on in so I think I had a fair bit of wine! (Alison here: yep, you did!) The cabin crew had also handed out some little smoked salmon amuse bouche plates.

We both watched films (Alison watched Ready Player One and The Matrix – no idea what I watched!) before we settled down to sleep for a few hours.

After waking up, I drank a lot of bottled water and ordered up some orange juice and tea to get the fluid levels back up. Alison also ordered tea and cookies and we carried on passing the time watching tv/playing games. 14 hours is a long old flight – although as we were in very comfy seats I can’t complain!

Before long it was time to think about breakfast – I had porridge and coffee and Alison had cereal, fresh fruit and cappuccino.

We got changed, checked all the various storage compartments and repacked our hand luggage ready for landing.

My first glimpse of the landscape outside was the coastline – woo hoo, it’s Australia!

At the airport we saw a flying doctor terminal – we must be in Australia then!

Touchdown was smooth and we were quickly off the plane to immigration. We appeared to be the only international flight around at that time - nothing at all like the Border Security programmes you see on the Dave tv channel at the weekends. We used the ePassport gates, then picked up our luggage and cleared customs remarkably quickly.

At last we’d made it to Australia! Welcome to Adelaide!

The shock to the system is that it’s a bit cold here, similar temperatures to back home really even though it’s spring here.

We were planning to take the local bus from airport to the hotel but decided that we were too tired so just took a taxi instead. Adelaide is quite compact and we knew the airport was only about 15 minutes drive from the city centre (total cost was AUD22 – about £12). We took in the sights along the way to get a feel for the place but the driver just drove in stony silence, not sure if this was usual or just us

It didn’t take too long before we arrived at the hotel, The Playford, which was down a side street where the main entrance to the reception was. As we approached the desk there was a bit of a commotion between the desk and concierge staff. It appeared that some chap had been thrown out earlier in the day and tried to get back in to get in a lift but he was stopped in his tracks – never did get to the bottom of it.

We had a bit of banter with the reception staff and we asked if this was normal for Adelaide? They laughed and sorted our room (103) and we headed upstairs without the man in tow.

Anyway, I liked the look of this Art Nouveau property and they had kept a lot of the original features including a wonderful period lounge bar. Our room was ok – no view at all really (overlooking the first floor of the multi storey car park!) but comfortable enough.

We dropped our things off and decided to wander out and take a look around the local area and to get our bearings. We had a quick cup of coffee a few doors down and decided how we wanted to play the rest of the day.

As we were quite tired and knew we would flag even more we decided to shower and change then go for an early dinner.

We walked down to Rundle Mall and most of the shops were closing for the day. The mall, well, just like any other mall we’ve been to really. We are probably not the best people to judge as we aren’t really shopping fans.

We were getting a bit peckish by now and those of you who are familiar with our report, Thai is our “Go To” restaurant type. It’s because it’s not as spicy as an Indian and not as greasy as some Chinese can be, and seems to travel well! We’d decided on the Lemongrass Thai Restaurant before we left our hotel as it was just the other side of the Rundle Mall so headed there. The place was a bit minimalist but very popular.

We had a Pad Thai and a spicy chicken stir fry between us, together with a couple of beers – which came to about AUD 50 – around £27.

We took a slow wander back and got a tad lost as we hadn’t really got our bearings but we managed to figure it out in the end. Just as well really as I hadn’t seen any public toilets along the way, seems to be getting more and more important to me these days! We stopped to buy some TimTams on the way in, just in case we woke up hungry in the middle of the night. They're a bit like penguin biscuits for those who aren't familiar!

I was flagging badly and just wanted to get back to room so the lure of the casino across the way next to the train station would just have to wait for another day.
