Reef, Rivers & Rainforests – Australia - September/October 2018 - Day 5 - Adelaide

Day 5 – Wednesday 26th September 2018 –Adelaide

Here

Not surprisingly I woke up very early this morning (about 3.30am) - I knew it’d take a while to get adjusted to all these time zone changes. Alison slept on, having a bit of extra time and eventually woke up at about 04:15. Oh the joys of long distance travel!

We made some hot drinks in the room and had a TimTam (as you do!) before FaceTiming the girls back at home for a quick chat. We discussed where to eat breakfast, what to do during the day and other important stuff. Knowing that Alison is a pancake fan I spotted The Original Pancake Kitchen, which was open 24 hours a day, fitted the bill perfectly.

Apparently, the place has been open since 1965 and has never closed, quite a feat and something you'd expect in New York. We found it eventually, tucked away down a backstreet and it was gloriously understated. I felt a bit sorry for the wait staff who looked half-awake but that was to be expected at this time.

Alison had a ‘Canadian’ (pancakes, with bacon and eggs and tomatoes) and I had a ‘Rancher’ (eggs, bacon, hash browns, tomatoes and damper) with 2 coffees. The total bill came to about 47 dollars which was a bit overpriced, I think.

We waddled back to the room to get changed for the day and headed out in the bright sunshine but the outside temps were just on the cusp of fleece / no fleece. That boded well for the rest of the day as it was warming up nicely.

We wandered along the North Terrace, past the Railway Station and across the King William Road over the river Torrens and towards the Adelaide Oval.

This could easily be a scene from the middle reaches of the Thames around Oxford as the large green park areas and kids sculling down the river looked very quintessentially English in nature. The whole area was small but perfectly formed, I have to admit there’s not a huge amount to do or see, at least for us, in Adelaide.

If we were cricket fans then we may have taken a tour of the Adelaide Oval but it didn’t hold any big attraction for us to be honest apart from being a major international sports stadium.

We walked back to the train station and took a train out to Mitcham.

As a bit of background, I was born and bred in deepest, darkest South London, Mitcham in fact, and always knew that there was at least one other town called Mitcham in the world and this would probably be my one and only chance to go visit the place.

The train was really cheap and we pulled out of the station and into the suburbs. I always enjoy (a) local public transport and (b) sights outside of the main town where “real” people live. For the most part the views were of older style bungalows, but the main difference to the UK was the lack or size of the back gardens, absolutely tiny or non-existent.

We arrived at Mitcham only to find that it was almost as
as un-impressive as its South London counterpart complete with Woolworths, Petrol station and convenience store. I took a couple of snaps and sent them back home via FB to some friends.

Not much to do or see here so back on the train to the station to decide what to do next. We checked the local route maps and noticed that there was a beach not too far away and reachable by train so that was it then. Just outside the station was the tram stop and we didn’t have too long to wait for the next tram to Glenelg.

As we chugged along the number of passengers became less and less and then we slowed down and came to a full stop a few stations out. The tram ahead of us had broken down! We didn’t know just how far away from the beach we were at this stage so we had to sit tight and wait it out.

Eventually we got going again and the tram came to the end of the line and we all disembarked really close to the beach and promenade. First impressions were really good, the place was small but had a lovely traditional seaside feel. Nice sandy beach, a pier, promenade and coffee and ice-cream shops – what’s not to like?

We had a coffee in a coffee shop and enjoyed the lovely warm weather.

We wandered along the shops and bought a couple of subs to eat for lunch on the beach, then wandered along enjoying the beach front before settling down to eat/drink/sunbathe a bit.

After a while we noticed there was a bit of a commotion going on along the pier. Lots of people were gathering so we wandered over to see what the excitement was all about. It was only as we approached the end of the pier that we noticed a sealion playing in the sea, our first bit of Australian wildlife!

We were nearly done for the day here so we had a coffee and then caught a different tram back to Adelaide which stopped virtually outside our hotel – result! We dropped out bags off then headed down to the small pool area in the basement for a swim/sauna etc.

On the way up to our room afterwards I noticed that it was “happy hour” in the bar and I figured that if we got a shuffle on we could just about make the last of the hour, it’d be rude not to take full advantage really! We showered and changed and headed down to the bar.

I tried Prancing Pony XPA and White Rabbit dark ale, all very pleasant and it was nice to see that craft beer brewing is alive and well and going global. I was worried it’d be all Fosters or VB or at worst, warm Guinness.

After the drinks we decided on steak for dinner – luckily there was a steak place opposite which had good reviews - called The Little Hunter. Well, Aussies are well known for their love of meat and steaks so we thought we’d give it a go. Being mid-week it wasn’t that busy so we had no trouble getting a table. The theming was kind of rustic / industrial and wouldn’t look out of place in hipster areas of London. I liked it a lot.

We ordered our food and drink (Alison had the wagyu steak and I had fillet steak with bearnaise sauce) – they were both excellent! Alison said her wagyu beef was out of this world! So tasty and tender and the meat just melted in her mouth, outstanding! I had a couple of local beers on offer and rounded off the meal with a nice cup of coffee.

We wandered over to the casino – it wasn’t huge (by Las Vegas standards) but we just wanted to have a go on the slots and set ourselves a limit of $10 each) Alison won $7 and I won $40!

That bought the day to a very pleasant close and we took the few steps back to the hotel for the night.

Tomorrow we’re on the move again!
