Day 3 - Enchantment of the Seas, Nassau-Bahamas

Saturday 3rd November 2018

We woke up this morning feeling much better after a good nights sleep. We had both slept really well, the bed is comfortable and spacious. Only very occasionally were we aware of the movement of the boat, it's really smooth. Perhaps the slight motion sent us to sleep! We got up just after 7am because we wanted to watch the sunrise from our balcony. The skies still looked a little stormy in parts, but we could see that we were sailing into nicer weather. Even at that time in the morning, although it was very windy on the balcony, it wasn't cold. We stood for a while watching the sun come up before going back inside to get ready. The shower cubicle in our bathroom is very small, and some contortions were required to ensure proper washing!

Once we were washed and dressed, we went to the Windjammer Cafe for breakfast. We both had a selection of hot items to start with, then went back for waffles.

It was very busy and we were lucky to find a table looking over the front of the ship. It's not every day we have a view like this at breakfast.

I managed to get some photos of the buffet items available. There were a couple more sections that I didn't manage to get. The selection of different foods was impressive.

After breakfast we went for a walk around the top deck of the ship. It was very windy but not cold. We stood at the front of the ship looking out for a while, and then at the back.

There were loads of loungers available so we took a seat for a while, but we could feel the heat in the sun between gusts of wind and were concerned about burning, so we went back to our cabin to get suncream. On our way back we met our room attendant in the hallway. Now, bear in mind we have only met him once before, very briefly last night. While we were still at the other end of the corridor from him, he called out "Mr Neil, Mrs Lynda, how are you today". Neil was highly impressed that he remembered us from our brief encounter. When we got to our room it had already been cleaned, we really can't fault the service at all.

Once we had packed a few things - suncream, kindle, selfie stick, phones etc., into a little bag we went to the solarium for a drink. Neil had an Archers cider which he said was much nicer then Strongbow, and I had the solarium bar's cocktail of the day, a Mai Tai.

While we were drinking the boat was about to pull into port at Nassau in the Bahamas, so we headed up to the pool deck to watch. There were several other boats in, a couple of Carnivals, a Norwegian and a Disney one. Our captain turned our ship and reversed in next to one of the Carnival ships, we were impressed at his manoeuvring skills.

Shortly afterwards the ship emptied a bit as people got off in Nassau. We had decided to make this a ship day, and weren't getting off so we got some towels and chose sun loungers up on Deck 10 to relax on. We got more drinks, a Bud Lite for Neil and Coke for me. We settled in, I read my book for a while and Neil people watched. It was nice and quiet around the pool area today, and very hot, 81 degrees we were told. After a couple of hours relaxing in the sun we went down to the Windjammer for lunch.

It was quiet in here, compared to yesterday's chaos, with lots of choice. Neil had a burger and a hot dog with chips, and I had macaroni cheese with salad. Neil said the burger was very good, the mac & cheese was ok, but not very saucy. We both had puddings afterwards, cookies and a tiny pavlova for Neil and fruit and a tiny pavlova for me.

We went for a wander then, and ended up in the Schooner Bar where a general knowledge quiz was about to start. We didn't register for it, but played along ourselves. We had a drink here, Neil's new favourite, a Tom Collins (the barman calls it a Gin Collins) for him, and I had a strawberry daiquiri.

We went back to our room for a while after that, to sit on our balcony which overlooked Nassau. Some of the buildings were pretty, and we could hear lots of noise, car horns, music, people shouting. It was all very lively.

After a while, we decided to get off of the boat, worried that we would regret it if we didn't. Immediately, there were people offering us Cuban cigars, or trying to get us to go on excursions. It was so busy, with so many people touting, and even hanging around the ATM machines that we just didn't feel comfortable there. We walked along the front street to the end, turned and walked right back to the ship again! In the end, we were off the ship for around 20 minutes in total, and it was enough for us. This is, of course, just our opinion of Nassau. We are aware that there are other things we could have done which might have been more enjoyable, for example, visiting the Atlantis resort but for us this cruise was all about enjoying the boat so we didn't book any extra trips. The hustle and bustle of port side Nassau just wasn't for us, others might enjoy that atmosphere.

When we were back on the ship we headed to the Schooner Bar for a much needed drink after that experience. Neil had a John (vodka) Collins and I had a new fashioned which we both enjoyed. Tonight was Formal Night on the ship and whilst we were sitting enjoying our drinks, people were passing through the bar dressed in ball gowns.

After we had finished our drinks, we decided that it was about time we visited the on board coffee chop, Latte-tudes, since we hadn't been there yet. Neil had a latte and I had a cappuccino and of course we had to have cakes with our coffees. A chocolate eclair for Neil and a vanilla Neapolitan, which was really a custard slice, for me. We sat overlooking the Centrum enjoying our coffees and cakes, and then went back to the room to get ready for dinner.

Although it was formal night, there wasn't a requirement to dress in ball gowns and tuxedos. I wore trousers and a nice too, and Neil wore dress shorts and a shirt. There were lots of other people wearing similar, and I saw some men with polo shirts, so we didn't feel out of place. If anything, I would say the ball gowned people were in the minority.

We headed down to the My Fair Lady dining room about 6.30pm. We had no wait at all and were immediately seated at the same table as yesterday. We ordered drinks, an Angry Orchard cider for Neil and a mojito for me.

The menu is the same every night, except they change the top 2 items on it, usually to fish dishes which we don't eat. I ordered the duck a l'orange which was really tasty, and Neil ordered the chicken breast which was meant to come with a thyme jus, but he changed that to a green pepper sauce. We didn't have starters again tonight, through choice, which seemed to upset our waiter Joao. But we did order dessert - Neil had the crepe brûlée again, as he had enjoyed it so much yesterday, and I had apple pie and ice cream.

No pic of the crepe brûlée, it's the same as yesterday!

After dinner we went for a walk around the boat outside, it was still very warm out. We came back into the ship through a different door which was right next to the Casino. We hadn't been in the part of the ship before, so decided to have a wander through. It smelled very smoky in the Casino, even though we didn't see anyone smoking, so we didn't hang about in there. The adjoining bar, Boleros, was the same. We had intended to stop here for a drink but instead went back to our now favourite bar, Schooners to get drinks before finding a seat above the Centrum area to sit and watch the goings on there. Neil had a Tom (gin) Collins, and I had Coke. It was quite entertaining sitting there. We saw people getting photos taken with the captain, various groups of people posing and taking photos on the stairs, a hen party, a group of people all wearing sailor hats!

About 9pm we headed back to our room where a towel dog was sitting the bed wearing my sunglasses. He was quite cute.

We stood out on the balcony for a while. We were still docked in Nassau, and the streets were a lot quieter now. There were quite a few people coming back onto the boat, and surprisingly some getting off. I read tomorrow's Cruise Compass and Neil watched some sport on the TV before turning in for the night.

Sounds like a nice relaxing day!

We've just got off Vision of the Seas (we did a transatlantic) and the ships are so similar! We were impressed with Windjammer and the selections - I ate so much salad and believe me I am NOT normally a salad person! For me, the main dining room was disappointing in terms of selection of foods - there were so many 'standard' menu items after 10 nights (we ate at speciality the other 3 nights) it was very boring and unimaginative.

We've been to the Bahamas quite a few times and have done Atlantis so now we tend to get off, walk to Senor Frogs for cocktails, nachos and wi-fi! I don't like walking through the port area but usually a firm no thank you is sufficient - you just say it a lot!

Looking forward to reading more.

Beautiful sunrise photos Seems a lovely relaxing start to the cruise, although there seems plenty to do if you wished to. Great cocktails

It sounds like the perfect start to your trip, getting to know the boat, being made to feel welcome by the room attendant, more lovely cocktails. A shame you felt a bit hassled in the port, but as you said you wanted a relaxing time on the ship and it seems like you have been able to chill and enjoy the atmosphere aboard. I wonder if Neil is beginning to enjoy the cruise ship life?

Looks lovely and you are really enjoying your cruise ! This time last year we were on our RC cruise. Loved it so much. We didn’t do the formal night either. Nice to do a bit of people watching !

20 minutes in Nassau was probably 19 minutes too long ! Definitely not what I expected.

Ooh, a transatlantic cruise sounds exciting. I can see how the food would become boring after a longer cruise.

I think if we went back we would go to Atlantis maybe, although cocktails, nachos and wifi sound like a good option Thank you for reading.

There was a lot to do if you enjoy getting involved in activities which we likened to an all-inclusive hotel in Spain. Nothing wrong with that if it's what you like, it's just not our cup of tea but we were happy just to wander and observe! Thanks for reading Sue

Yes! We both really enjoyed cruise ship life, I think we will do it again, probably not this one though. We chose this one because it conveniently fitted in with our other plans, not because we particularly wanted to visit the Bahamas. We've already discussed that the next one will be to visit places that we want to see. Thanks for reading Abby

Lol, yes at least we can say that! The cocktails were very good indeed

I can't believe how well we slept on the ship, it's most unlike us, but very welcome. Thank you for reading Emma

The breakfast buffet, and indeed the lunch offerings were very impressive in the Windjammer. Thank you for reading

We enjoyed our day and we're glad we got off the ship in the end. At least it's not just us that didn't think much of Nassau then! Thanks for reading Joan

We did really enjoy the cruise, glad you did too . People watching can be very interesting

I'm so glad others don't rate Nassau either. Before I posted, Neil said I would get slated on here for not giving it a chance, but I wanted to post how we really felt, not a made up version to pacify people who might love it. Thanks for reading Lynda
