Reef, Rivers and Rainforests – September/October 2018 - Day 15 - Thala Beach Reserve (again)
Day 15 – Saturday 6th October 2018 – Great Barrier Reef
Reef, Rivers and Rainforests – September/October 2018 Link to trip report index – including pre trip report: Here Surprisingly we were awake at a reasonable time and after showering etc we walked up to the main building and managed to snag one of the premier tables for breakfast. Premier in our view as it was one of the outermost tables, nearest the edge where you could sit and watch the brightly coloured birds come down to bath in the crook of a tree. Once again, the most of beautiful birds made the most shrieking noises imaginable! As before it was a delicious breakfast in an amazing location. Once back in the room we packed for a day on the beach, after all this is really why we had come to this spot, to kick back, relax and have some downtime after all the activities so far this trip. We slowly walked down the paths and took in a couple of viewpoints along the way before settling down on the on the beach armed with snacks and drinks. Absolute bliss as we were the only people on the palm fringed beach, no noise and open sea and hundreds of acres of blue sky above – our little slice of paradise for the day. Time passed and we swam, sunbathed, read and made notes for this trip report. We spent plenty of time in the sea – making the most of the lovely warm water. We saw what looked like Kiosk Keith’s kiosk but it was unmanned, you could have a picnic delivered and at peak times it’s opened for drinks and cocktails. Reluctantly we eventually made our way off the beach and dusted down our feet and made our way back to the room going via small swimming pool to cool down. It was a little too early for an evening meal but we thought we’d pop along to Port Douglas anyway to take a look around in the daylight. We’d previously spotted the Lady Douglas Paddle Boat river cruise that only took a short period of time so we thought why not. We booked to go on the sunset cruise and set off from the marina and headed down the mangrove channel of Dickson Inlet where the odd bits of interest was pointed out with a chance of seeing some crocodiles and other wildlife. Well, it was a bit boring to be honest, we didn’t see any crocs but it was relaxing, and we got a free glass of prosecco and some nibbles and chatted to various people! It was fairly picturesque though. We stayed in Port Douglas afterwards and went to Paddy’s Irish Pub where I couldn’t resist the pokies (slot machines), and had a minor win. We decide that the pub food didn’t look too bad so we stayed to eat. I had burger and chips but WHOA! The chips had obviously fallen in the salt box, wow! Perhaps it was just a ploy to make us drink more? Luckily the local IPA was very good so I had a couple of pints (and Alison drove home!) We drove back in time for a Stargazing event held in the grounds provided by the hotel and were armed with star maps and binoculars. A very enthusiastic lady guided us to the open area with 10” telescope and LED pointer pen and showed us various stars, constellations and areas of the Milky Way. Back to start packing – we’re on the move again tomorrow! Transport count (running total!): Flights: 5 Ferries/boats: 5 Trains: 11 Trams: 2 Tubes: 1 Ubers/Taxis: 3 Coaches/Buses/shuttles: 10 Step Count today: 7094 Total step count for the trip: 145447

The beach looks fabulous! And to have it to yourselves - what could be better!
Shame the boat trip was a bit dull. Well done on the win
