Reef, Rivers and Rainforests – September/October 2018 - Day 17 - Adelaide (again)
Day 17 – Monday 8th October 2018 – Adelaide
Reef, Rivers and Rainforests – September/October 2018 Link to trip report index – including pre trip report: Here We woke up at a reasonable time (despite the late night) and headed down to breakfast which was included in the rate. The hotel was nicely decorated (kind of tall and narrow) and was the newest five star boutique hotel, located right in the heart of the city at the corner of King William and Hindley Streets in the heritage-listed, beautifully renovated Colonial Mutual Life building. The breakfast room was on the lower ground floor so no natural light but was a really lovely subterranean space complete with honey bar! Not seen that before although I’m not a huge fan of honey so it was kind of wasted on me but popular with others, including Alison. We packed and left our cases with the concierge and decided to just wander for the day to see more of the outskirts of Adelaide. We just bought a bought a train day ticket for $10.40 and took a ride out to the end of the line at Outer Harbour on the Fluerie peninsula. I thought there must be something of interest here as it’s where you can catch the ferry to Kangaroo Island. How wrong I was as we chugged out through the suburbs and looked out over a number of residential neighbourhoods before being the only people getting off at the end of the line. We wandered off the platform and looked at the large commercial harbour, no glamour here to speak of. There was really a lot of nothingness! I went to take a couple of picture just to prove we were here when I discovered I’d left my phone on the train! Panic set in as I ran furiously and jumped back on the train and found my phone right there on the seat – Phew! Heart pounding I even managed to get off the train before it pulled out – what a lucky escape! This was the picture I went to take when I realised I didn't have my phone (and then of course did take it once I rescued my phone again!) We wandered around for a while, thinking there must be a town centre nearby for a coffee but it appeared to be nothing within real walking distance so we sat down on the platform and waited for the next train back. Silence was only broken by some odd couple on bicycles – I suspect they must’ve wondered what we were doing there too! We headed back into Adelaide and grabbed a quick burger for lunch in Hungry Jack’s (which appears to be the Burger King equivalent – all the same branding etc). It was really quite grim, so we ate and escaped. We then decided to go back to Glenelg and the beach on the tram. The trip was slightly marred by a group of teenage boys doing what a group of teenage kids do – larking about, being a bit of a nuisance but not directly bothering us. We went through some stations called Croydon, West Croydon etc – all slightly bizarre! We eventually arrived, relatively untroubled by the kids and wow, not quite the 25 degrees here though! Quite a bit cooler than the weather we’d been experiencing recently. We walked down to the pier and took in some of the shops we hadn’t explored previously before going into the Cibo coffee shop for a warming drink - wonderful! We worked our way back on the tram without any teenage interruptions and pulled into Rundle Mall to get the girls some presents but nothing really struck us as anything suitable. We admired a few statues including this one: As we walked back we thought we’d have a quick go in the Adelaide casino where we tried our luck at a couple of slots with our loose change and I won 150 Australian Dollars! No paper cash outs here, it was all in coins and I felt a little embarrassed as the machine chunked out 150 coins in to the tray and received admiring glances from the other punters there. (We then went and exchanged all our coins for notes with the cashier!) Feeling somewhat amused / pleased we made our way back to the hotel and sorted out our luggage (packing away all our day wear into cases and putting travelling clothes on) before leaving and getting a taxi arranged to take us back to the airport. For a change we had a chatty driver as we made our way which passed the time quite nicely as we made our way through the final Australian airport. Check in for our flight to Doha was uneventful and the Qantas lounge was pretty much as we’d become used to over the course of this trip. I had a couple of snacks whilst Alison popped out to the concourse shops to do some last minute shopping. After a while our gate was called and we made our way into the plane as night fell, settled down for take off and took our last glimpses of Australia, a really sad moment but we’d already agreed to return – we loved it! Goodbye Australia - it's been a blast! Just a quick note here – there’s a fairly creepy looking guy on the Qatar safety video – looks a bit like a mannequin. Showing the picture here for posterity! I had a couple of drinks and some cheese and biscuits and a port and watched The Shape of Water before finally succumbing to sleep at 00:50 local time. Alison tells me she had a couple of glasses of champagne, had something to eat (the afternoon option bizarrely – at midnight!) and watched a film, before falling asleep too. Next stop Doha! Transport count (running total!): Flights: 8 Ferries/boats: 5 Trains: 13 Trams: 4 Tubes: 1 Ubers/Taxis: 5 Coaches/Buses/shuttles: 10 Step Count today: 12811 Total step count for the trip: 162237

Love the pig statue!
Last days can always be tricky to find something worthwhile to do! Glad you manage to get your phone back - that would have been frustrating otherwise!
