We stayed in Gisburn a year or so ago. We drove up to Pendle and walked Pendle hill. The day after we went to Ribchester to the Roman ruins and bath house. The pubs in both places were lovely x

Take the bikes and hit Hully Gully.

If mountain biking is not your thing... maybe a walk around the forest is more suited.

Hiya, I live in Skipton which is not that far from Gisburn and you could have a look round the castle and town and then have something to eat at one of the very many lovely food establishments. I highly recommend Elsworth Kitchen on Coach Street or, as you have an 8 year old, visit Billy Bob's Ice Cream Parlour which is in Halton East. Check it out online and book in advance with it being half term in North Yorkshire as it is very popular and gets quite busy. There's also the Embsay Steam Railway which can take you on the short journey to Bolton Abbey station from which its a short walk over to the Abbey itself. I agree with the idea about Gisburn forest as its beautiful for walks or mountain biking. If you're going to be going towards Pendle, check out the Pendle Sculpture Trail. Give me a shout if you want any other ideas.

My hometown Barnoldswick is about 10 minutes down the road, has a really good tearooms (Victoria's) on the square and a few independent shops that are quite nice. Clitheroe also nice in the other direction.

Clitheroe castle, Whalley abbey, Ingleton waterfalls walk. Someone on here recommend the Pendle witches mystery treasure trail which is in Barrowford (something I hope to do soon). Pendle steps is a nice walk that starts in Barley. Your son might like Bowland wild boar park. If you go to Ribchester as some have suggested try Stydd gardens for lunch the food is lovely it is in a sort of large greenhouse.

Nearest big supermarkets probably in Clitheroe - Tesco and Sainsburys. Barnoldswick has a co-op and Aldi. Skipton for Morrison's. My friend lives at Todber, it's beautiful.
