london to Sydney non-stop - could you ?
Just watching a YouTube video on this Qantas research flight which takes 19.5 hours to go from LHR to Sydney (SYD) non stop.
If you had to get to australia would you rather do it in one 19.5 hour leg or split it half way ? It does make interesting viewing (because I like this sort of stuff) Thanks to DW for mentioning this flight- apparently it was on the news.

I think I could, if I was in business, but not in a million years in economy. However, the prices are going to be expensive and the flight is worse for the environment than doing 2 flights, so if I probably wouldn’t do it.

I agree . On the video they did talk about the extra fuel required to do the flight in one leg.

Yes I would, only in buisness. Currently considering the Quantas non stop to Perth that is two hours less.
Not sure how we know it’s worse for the environment yet as they haven’t yet created the plane that can take a full load to do the trip. |

I have flown to and from Australia many times as I have lived there. I would definitely rather do it in one leg than two. We never do stop overs so I can see no benefit in splitting it up.
We will be visiting again in 2021 and I will price this flight up for that. The longest flight I have done to date is New York to Tokyo which is just over fourteen hours. Edited at 09:03 AM. |

I’d consider the Perth flight but I’d want to be in business and that’s never going to happen...

I’d do it. I’ve flown to Australia numerous times and the last time our flight was delayed landing in Dubai. When we finally landed, we were escorted through security straight on to the departing plane to Sydney. The whole process probably took 20 minutes maximum and we were back in the air. Not really much of a break. I would definitely worry about DVT though if I was in economy. It’s a long time to be sat.

I dont understand the maths but the basic principle is that because you are carrying enough fuel for the whole journey you need extra fuel to carry the extra fuel because its extra weight.
In the video of the journey they didn't have any economy class passengers and the normal galley stock (of "un healthy foods") was also cut right back. Sitting here nursing a broken leg I think I may put of trying for a while

It’s not for me. I like to split the journey in the Far East with at least a two night stay. That way I arrive in better condition (less tired and not as jet lagged) and not spend the first few days recovering. If I could afford business class (very unlikely) I might try it.
In all seriousness, Oz and NZ are off our list of destinations now owing to the ‘effort’ of getting there - unless it was by cruise ship! Edited at 09:42 AM. |
