From NY to LA - Day 9 - Off to Vegas Baby!
DH got up at 5am to go and see the sun rising over the canyon. I stayed in bed! Apparently it was brilliant as the rocks kept changing colour. I've watched the video he took... but got bored after a while! DM went down to watch it at about 6ish and on her was was surrounded by a herd of deer which freaked her out a bit in case the elk was around too! When they came back we went to the Maswik Lodge cafe for breakfast. It was quite pricey but DH managed to get a few more quarters for his collection!
We went up to the visitors centre and realised why people were parking on the road. We hadn't so there was a bit of a walk to the rim. There were also bus loads of tourists and it was only 9am. We had a long drive ahead to Vegas on very straight boring roads. We stopped in a Denny's in Kingman for some lunch and then went for a walk around a nearby K Mart. Bought petrol which was $2.69 a gallon. Traffic was quite slow by the time we got to the Hoover Dam so we were able to take pics It took a further 45 mins to get to Vegas. Big Mike the Tom Tom man got us to the front door of MGM but we managed to find our way to the car park around the back! We checked in and went up to our rooms (sharing a lift with a bunch of drunk swearing young men!) but our door key cards weren't activated. We left the kids with the bags and DH and I went back to the desk to get them activated. This rtime there was another couple in the lift and then we were joined by 6 bikini clad girls who were talking about what they were going to do with each other in the shower and about how a lift would be a good place for an o*gy! I'm sure they were only saying this for effect... but I told DH that DS was not to go in the lift on his own! He's 21 - but DH said he would chaperone him! Then in hindsight we did a daft thing. My DM took over as tour guide and took us to the Excalicur, Luxor and Mandalay Bay all within the space of an hour! I can't remember what was in any of them! What a culture shock after the last few days of beautiful spa hotel in Scottsdale and peaceful Grand Canyon! We had a look around New York New York and had food here. The food court is set out like a little village. I had fish and chips! They also had lovely desserts. We ended up with these: We went back to MGM but DD was not allowed in the casino area so DM, DD and I had a coffee at the side of the casino floor and people watched! We saw some sights! It was party time in Wet Republic - the pool party area. Sean "Diddy" Cooms and will.i.am were amongst those hosting the all day parties. That explains the lift shenanigans! What a mad day of contrasts!

Cakes look yummy! That contrast between the light and dark rock shows how much water levels have dropped in Vegas, they reckon they could be out of water in 5 years so better get the visits in now!

Culture shock - from the sublime to the ridiculous me thinks! But love them both - the peace and tranquility of GC to the madness of LV .
