SULP... anyone doing it at school?

Ross has now been part of his class's SULP (Social Use of Language Programme) group within the ASN Wing for the last 6 months or so...we have noticed that Ross will now manage eye contact for at least 3-4 minutes whereas before there was very little... we had a SALT review meeting a little while back and they thought that Ross would benefit from this programme in a small setting rather than a large class setting...so he attends his SULP group with 3 other children in his wing and we do feel he is benefiting from this...just little things like the eye contact and now taking turns...

Just wondered if this programme had been rolled out nationwide?

Not sure really-

Edward attends 'Ginger Bear Club' once a week at his school, and it is a socialisation group, where a small group of 5-6 children do activities together that involve interaction and talking. He is only 5, so very basic, but he seems to enjoy it, and has even learnt a song from it(albeit with every other word a mumble! ). I have never heard of it under a different name though..

Great news about Ross, you must be really pleased. Well done him!

I work in a primary school, and we have SULP groups too. These have been around for quite a while - our school have been running them for as long as I've been there, which is 10 years now. No doubt the focus has changed slightly over all that time, but turn-taking and maintaining eye contact are a big part of it.

I'm glad you're noticing a difference and feel that it's been successful.

My DS had this at primary school and it did help a lot. He's now at an ASD unit attatched to mainstream and continues with a lot of these programmes.

Paula, good to hear that the SULP has helped Ross. Thomas did these programmes also and we saw some improvement with eye contact and tolerance of others too.

Never heard of SULP before. I attend a group once a week of about 7 or 8 other children, where we all do activities while listening to music or whatever. Our school calls it Clwb Cymdeuthasu (socialising club). I can't say my eye contact has improved any since September. Well done Ross.
