Rome. Day 4 - Vesuvius And Pompeii

It was an early start. Up about 5am to get to Piazza de Popollo to meet up with the tour to Vesuvius and Pompeii.

It was raining as we went to Termini station to get the metro to Flamino. We were a bit concerned that with the rain Vesuvius would be closed. But as time went on the rain cleared and stayed dry for the rest of the day.

The long winding road is a nightmare. I really would not want to be the coach driver. We met several coaches on their way down as we were going up.

It is quite a hike up from the car park to the crater. You certainly feel it!

It is worth the effort though.

After spending about an hour getting up and down we headed off for lunch with the tour. Then on to Pompeii.

Pompeii was preserved under 6 metres of ash. None of it was burnt and the condition of the buildings and the sheer size of the place was amazing.

I had visited before many years ago when I was about 13.

Over 2000 years old and from the tour life seemed to be quite good there. A rich city.

The volcano that caused the problems. The eruption in 79AD was a shock to them as they didn't realise it was even a threat to them. Pompeii had existed for 700 years by then with just earthquakes destroying parts of the city in the years leading up to the devastation.

A long day came to an end. The tour ended back in Rome at 9pm.

Back on the metro and a quick bite to eat. Back to the hotel to start again tomorrow.
