Rome. Day 5 - The Vatican

Today was a slow start after the busy day at Pompeii.

We took the metro to the Vatican after checking online it said that in the afternoons there should be less queues. We were still pestered by the touts every two steps trying to get us to skip the lines by paying them 25 euros over the asking price.

Beggars and touts seem to be everywhere in Rome and the touts start off in English. If you ignore them they spout off in Italian thinking you do not speak English.

So we started off in St Peters square. With the Basilica.

There was a small queue to go through the X-ray and scanner similar to airport security to get into the Basilica. But no more than 15 minutes.

Even in that queue they were still trying to get us to skip the line tour at the museum.

This is looking back at St Peters square from the entrance to the Basilica.

It is quite an impressive building both inside and out. You can tell that a lot of money has been poured into this.

I didn't realise that it was subdivided up into lots of smaller chapels. The girls had to cover their shoulders out of respect so were feeling a bit hot and bothered while inside.

This picture is of the biggest area of the church at the far end and spans the entire width.

We then went down below to the crypt where the previous Popes and St Peter the apostle are buried.

From the Basilica we walked right around the Vatican to the museum. Now where the Basilica is free to get in the museum charges 16 euros each but under 18's are 8 euros. There was absolutely no queue at all for tickets.

The entry also includes the Sistine Chapel, where Michael Angelo spent years painting the ceiling.

This photo is of the courtyard of the museum before you enter the mile long walk through the various galleries to visit the chapel.

You are not allowed to take photos inside the chapel but there are some very impressive works of art in the other galleries where you can take photos.

One of the long galleries leading out of the museum.

By this time we had lost the will to look at any more and needed some refreshment in the cafe. Feet were throbbing and the July heat was getting a bit much.

One thing you can say in Rome the air conditioning is not like the American fridge style!
