Around Orlando and Florida in general there are some popular routes which are commonly used by visitors which are toll roads.
The most common ones are the SR417 and SR528 which are often used by those flying into Orlando (MCO) and Sanford (SFB).

Additionally the Florida turnpike is a toll road often used from those Flying into Miami (MIA)

The tolls typically from MCO are small depending buy vary by the exit but are currently $3.25 to exit 0 on the SR417 for the I4, less if you come off earlier.
The SR528 from MCO is $1.75 to the I4.

If that's all you are planning on using the toll roads for then the rental company schemes probably aren't worth it.
Most of the time going to and from the tourist places around Orlando itself you won't use the toll roads.
Travelling down to Tampa, Busch Gardens or Clearwater won't use a toll road either.

However travelling further afield may.
Also note that due to recent developments that certain roads in Miami-Dade county and part of the Florida Turnpike from 19th Feb 2011 are now electronic payment method only.

For the Turnpike, the section from Florida City going north to Miramar (just north of Miami) is affected.
Many people driving to/from MIA would use this section by default.




NO manual booths will be available.
The options are either sunpass, the rental companies own transponder scheme or the new TOLL-BY-PLATE scheme.

Note the TOLL-BY-PLATE scheme bills the registered owner (rental company) which may incur admin charges for the renter and vary by rental company.

The other toll roads in Miami-Dade county which have already been converted.
The Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX), which operates five tolled expressways in Miami-Dade County, has eliminated cash toll collections on three of its expressways—State Road 924, State Road 874 and State Road 878.
The Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) has eliminated cash toll collection on its Selmon Expressway.

How does it work? Cameras take a photo of the rental car's license plate as it goes through the toll lane and sends a bill for the tolls to the rental company's tolling program vendor. The vendor collects the toll plus applicable service fees from the customer's credit card, and pays the toll to the road agency. The service fees are retained by the vendor, not the toll road.

The car rental companies operate their own toll pass schemes which are listed below.

Hertz and Firefly

PlatePass® enables Hertz and Firefly rental car customers to avoid waiting in toll lines to pay cash or coins by using the SunPass Only and E-Pass designated lanes in Florida,
They offer this service for $4.95 per rental day, plus incurred tolls at the cash toll rates, if PlatePass® is used at any time during the rental period. The maximum service fee (excluding tolls) is no longer $24.95 per rental month with Hertz but the fee is payable each and every day See the below image
All Hertz and Firefly rental cars are pre-enrolled and no advanced commitment or contract is required to use PlatePass®. The toll charges are calculated electronically and charged to the same credit card that was used to rent the vehicle. The daily PlatePass® fee is only charged when the rental car uses the designated toll lanes.
PlatePass® identifies rental vehicles as they travel through the high-speed electronic toll collection lanes. Tolls are processed and later charged to the credit card used to rent the vehicle. Receipts will be available on www.PlatePass.com after the vehicle is returned.

Budget and Avis

Note there has been a report of Budget charging you even if you used a cash toll, you must ensure the device is turned off before setting off from the airport. It registers you if switched on, even using a cash toll lane.

eToll is our company's electronic toll collection program which makes road travel more convenient! Avis eToll eliminates the need for travelers to carry change or wait in long cash payment lines at toll plazas and allows Avis renters to zip through electronic toll payment lanes. Avis eToll cannot be reserved in advance, but is already installed in many cars. Simply call your Avis location ahead of time to verify that eToll enabled vehicles are on hand. Avis eToll is optional and available for a low daily fee plus the cost of tolls.


State of Florida
In the state of Florida the renter has the option of using Sun-Pass Only, ePass Only, and Leeway high-speed lanes. When a renter utilizes these high-speed toll lanes, the toll system identifies the car and charges the standard non-discounted fee for toll roads as published by the toll authority plus the convenience fee of $5.95 per day and $29.75 maximum per month. The fee will be posted to the credit card you used on your rental. Effective February 19, 2011, Florida’s Turnpike no longer accepts cash payments for tolls on the southernmost 47 miles of Florida’s Turnpike (Homestead Extension) in Miami-Dade County (Milepost 0 to Milepost 47. By driving on this road you opt-in to use of Budget e-Toll.


How much does e-Toll cost?
When Budget e-Toll is accessed even once per rental period, customers will be charged the posted cash toll rate, plus a convenience fee of US $5.95 per rental day ($29.75 maximum per month).

Budget / Avis offer e-Toll Unlimited which includes the cost of the tolls. This is charged at $11.99 per day up to a maximum of $59.95 per week

How to I sign up for e-Toll?
State of Florida
Every rental car is e-Toll ready. No pre-enrollment or sign up is required. No extra paperwork is required and customers to not have to stop at the Budget counter if they want to utilize Budget e-Toll. When driving a Budget vehicle, the renter has the option of using the Sun-Pass only and ePass only express lanes without stopping. If the renter decides to use the express lane, the renter will be charged the standard non-discounted fee for the roads as published by the toll authority plus the convenience fee of $5.95 per rental day for each and every day of your rental or $29.75 maximum per month for use of this service.

Should you wish to use the e-toll unlimited system, you will need to sign up to this at the rental desk.

The TollPass Program offered in Colorado, Florida, Texas, and California Bay Area is a service which allows the customer to drive through a designated toll express lane and pay electronically.
When one of our rental vehicles passes through a designated toll express lane and generates an unpaid toll, the toll and any applicable TollPass Convenience Charge will be charged to the same credit/debit card that is used to rent the vehicle.

When renting without a credit/debit card, any unpaid tolls and applicable TollPass Convenience Charges generated by our vehicles passing through a toll express lane will be billed to the renters' home address.

Payment remittance information will be provided with the toll bill.

The TollPass Convenience Charge is a $3.95 charge for each day you use a toll express lane on roadways covered by our TollPass provider, up to a maximum of $19.75 per rental, plus the cost of all unpaid tolls.

This costs $10.49 per day, $52.49 a week but includes all toll charges but pricing on this has been hard to pin down.
Note there have been several reports of Dibbers getting the Dollar scheme for $19.99 + tax per week.





Please be aware of the subtle differences on the images above! It will be noted that some Companies state ''per rental Month'' and some say ''per rental Period'' In addition the daily admin charge has slight variations also. For example with Alamo and National if you just drive through 1 toll you will only be charged an admin fee for that day. With Avis that 1 toll activation will lead to an admin fee being charged each day (up to the maximum) even if the car is not driven through a toll again.


Sunpass.

SunPass is a prepaid toll program. Your SunPass Mini sticker has no funds and will not work unless you activate it either online, at www.SunPass.com, in person or by phone at 1-888-TOLL-FLA (1-888-865-5352).
The minimum starting balance is $10..0 0. Please have the following information ready when you call:
1. ID number (located on the SunPass Mini)
2. Your driver’s license number
