We had five nights in San Diego when our eldest two were nearly 3 and 5. We could easily have stayed longer.

Another thing you can do from San Diego is get the train to the border and walk over the bridge into Mexico. Quick and easy to get into Mexico but takes a bit longer to get back into the USA (and take your passports!).

Wouldn't advise taking children into Mexico via the border crossing. Not a pleasant experience by all accounts, even adults report feeling uncomfortable at best. Plenty to do and see in San Diego without wandering south of the border.

Thanks everyone.

I did the border cross to Mexico when I was a child and was horrified! I still remember it! Can remember the flies very where and my dad emptied his change from the car and gave to a priest collecting for kids to be told that it was scam!

Thanks for all the tips. Looking forward to getting a deal hopefully as hotels are really expensive. Quite shocked at the cost of hotels in the west coast for even 2/3 star and I want minimum 4! Still can't believe what I'm paying for 2 nights at the Disneyland hotel! Gulp! X

With the exception of Las Vegas hotel prices on the West Coast can be a bit minty. We book with Expedia when offers are on, generally with hotels that allow cancellations if something better (or cheaper) comes along. Sometimes booking direct with hotels can get you a decent price too.
