Giving birth in the us

I know that Americans have to have health insurance ideally, but I was wondering, do Americans have to pay to give birth? Is that covered by insurance? What if you don't have insurance?

It is one of the conditions covered by most insurance plans. My friends daughter is a nurse, her pregnancy was relatively straight forward until near the end when she needed an early C-section to deliver her twins. Bear in mind this was 9 years ago and the girls needed less than a week in NICU - the bill was $54k! Luckily her health insurance covered the majority of those costs.
I've no idea what happens if you don't have insurance - I imagine there's still Medicare coverage for those who are out of work.

Yes they have to pay. I’m not sure how much it costs but it’s not cheap. And insurance never covers everything.

Wow $54k! Does Medicare cover costs of any emergency? I've no idea how the us medical system works at all 😳

Thanks Bev - sadly the article is behind a paywall but the first few sentences seemed pretty shocking. But then I can't believe all Americans can afford this yet they still give birth.

My cousin lives in Atlanta and her insurance only covered a straight forward birth. She had an emergency section and is still paying the bill. Her wee boy will be 6 soon.

My cousin lives in Maine and I think her youngest was 9 before she finished payments

My friend gave birth in the states and everything was covered by their insurance.
