If one item is over the limit I do beleive they will charge you on the whole cost not the difference between the cost and the allowance.

Really interesting thread. We don't go over the limit, but if we did it is encouraging to find out that it's not that dear to go legit. It's probably worth it for items that are much dearer here.

It would be hard to say exactly, the duty rate differs for different items, electrical items I believe is not too high. Dont forget you also pay VAT at 17.5% (until 31/12/10) The VAT is on the item value plus the duty.

If in doubt ask an Officer or pick up the RED phone to speak to one if there is no one about.

If you go through the Green and get caught you may have to pay an extra fine if the item is of considerable value.

Dont forget to be nice, they are only doing a job.

Daft question I know but, we've been to the USA quite a few times and inevitably clothes bought on previous trips are going to be packed for this one. How can I prove they weren't bought on this trip and worn to avoid duty? (receipts thrown away long ago) I'm usually close enough to the limit for it to matter but never really thought about it before IYKWIM

I don't know the answer really but just a thought, have the labels inside the clothes worn, due to washing? If so, that would prove it.

Hi,
I posted yesterday with info saying that some manufacturers are putting small date codes on the underside of washing labels in clothes such as fall10 sum10 ( autumn 2010,summer 2010) or in the case of a pair of old navy jeans I have Hol07 ( bought xmas 2007).
All the little bar codes on the toungue of trainers and clothing items store a wealth of information... ie some stores in the Uk now have built in stock checkers in the label prompting new ones to be ordered automatically.
I don't think taking clothes you have bought previously would be anything to worry about.
We are taking our netbook with us in November (bought last year) and as we are intending buying another this year I will take the receipt with us just in case.

Just a note of caution folks - don't ever say on a public board that you intend to defraud the government of this or any other country, by knowingly not declaring items for tax purposes - that then becomes conspiracy to defraud - which carries a higher sentence, than merely "misunderstanding" the rules and being found out.
