Sorry to OP to say this, but you have a better chance even on a weekday. Say you are out of heathrow at 9am. That is still after peak rush hour. Your journey time will probably be more like 90 mins. 75mins if you are lucky.

Fingers crossed for you both!

Thanks everyone - I haven’t booked the flights yet so I will be going for a later flight. I too was thinking of using 12 transfers. Hope all goes well @jane2211

Wow, personally I wouldn't do it, even if luck is with you it is very tight , when we travel we use the m25 to Gatwick going past Heathrow and in all the years it has never been 70 mph all the way - there is always speed restrictions even with no valid reason

I also think that’s tight. Any chance of an earlier flight in so you could stay the night at Heathrow?
We have done this before and used Apple or blackberry cars?
It was a fruit of some sort!

We did this (it was super cheap) and succeeded however I'm not sure I'd do it again due to the fact there are so many factors that could let you down, we were lucky.
On the way out we landed at Heathrow early from Manchester, straight through to luggage which was already coming round on the carousel. Straight out to our waiting booked transfer (took us about 15 minutes).
Our transfer however was late by 15 minutes which started eating into our headstart and got panic buttons flashing. The journey to Gatwick took us 50 minutes (luckily no major traffic issues was busy as it was a Monday morning) We did fast track security which was a walk through and had time the other side to nip to Costa and have a loo stop. So going I would say was easy and we felt confident it can be done, what had I been worrying about

Now then the return wasn't as simple..we were an hour late leaving Orlando due to storms, that's ok you always land a bit earlier coming back I said to myself. So we landed the time we were scheduled (no cheeky hour to play with) and because some passengers had been ill during the flight we were held onboard until ground staff had been on to check them and have them fill out paperwork. Not ideal that was another 30 minutes, we were straight through passport control no problem, no wait we had premium again and our luggage was enjoying a trip around the carousel. All good except our transfer wasn't there - again! Quick call and he was in the car park, phew it had added another 10 minutes though. 50 minutes to Heathrow again, he did weave through that traffic like a mad man though must've picked up our vibes. Straight to check in machine three bags gone when the machine said 'no'. Check in had closed the lady we flagged down to assist helpfully told us it was because we were late But she took pity and manually checked us in and I could've cried with relief we had made it - just!
So in hindsight would I do it again? Not if there was a better option but at £300 a flight who knows. If all goes smooth its easy but I certainly didn't think ill passengers would be something I needed to worry about.
Sorry its a long post just wanted to share an actual experience by someone who lived it.

Surely all the transfers that would be needed to enable this would outweigh any cost savings?, unless these are included. No way would attempt this, sounds very stressful

Transfers cost us £75 each way, flights were £1225 for 4 adults so a great price but yes very stressful and I suppose up to the individual to decide if it's worth it. But I agree not sure if it's worth the worry and hassle, its a lot to lose and it's out of your control. It showed us how easy it could be to go wrong.

We had this connection last year and ended up cancelling and re booking as it was to tight. On the way back we did this and on a Sunday morning at 6am took an hour to get from Gatwick to Heathrow

We done it this year with 5 hours in between flights... wouldn't want any less than that now...wasn't tight but we weren't stressing and had time to grab a coffee at Heathrow... we were delayed 40 minutes coming in as well
