We had a quote last year and it was around £1000 a room. If we were sure we were staying in this house (currently trying to relocate!) then we would pay for it.

I've been thinking about getting a unit for my man cave in the garden. In the summer it's virtually unusable due to the heat that comes through the felt shingle roof.

A 9000BTU unit costs about £350, I'll fit it myself.

Recent elec costs have made me look twice whether I really need one, or just want one.

Where do those who have had these installed locate the outside condenser units? Are they big?

This was a huge consideration as they are quite unsightly so we obviously didn't want any on the front of the house. Also another reason why I'd really have liked the attic / hatch unit that we could have without getting all our roof beams changed!

We have one that sits on our patio just outside the patio doors, you don't really notice it. The upstairs one is on arms that stick out of the side of the house, as it's between our house and next doors, it's sits over the pathway in-between and behind a tree, so again is pretty well hidden unless you're looking for it.

They look like big heaters / radiators.

This influenced which units we chose as the cheaper wall mounted units need the outside units to be directly opposite on the other side of the wall.

We are looking into installing ourselves but you need to be registered to buy the units and to gas them so are going to get a quote and see how much of the work DH can do himself to bring the cost down.

We’re in a terrace, so have one at the front and one at the back of the house, they’re not pretty but to be honest, the benefits outweigh any ugliness. Our neighbours have it too but they are end terrace so have their condenser units on the side wall which is less unsightly.

I often hear the argument that you only need them for a few days a year but we use ours a lot, and they are great for heating when going into autumn and don’t want to put the central heating on yet ☺️

You don't need to be registered to buy them.

To maintain the warranty you need them installed by a registered fitter, but you can do it yourself.

The unit I was/am looking at is recharged with gas and you then 'pull a vacuum' to activate it. My friend fitted one to his shed and did the work himself.

My husband can only sell to you if you are Fgas registered or if you are using an Fgas registered installer to buy it.

The gas is the tricky thing as you dont want it leaking into the atmosphere.

We have noticed that on a lot of websites, they want an Fgas number to even sell you the units.

In my previous house I fitted units in the main bedroom and lounge - loved them!

My only advise is not to have the bedroom unit fitted above your bed, but in an area where your bed is not underneath it directly.
