Having flooded myself over ten years ago I just feel such sadness and distress when I see others affected. It really is an horrendous thing to go through and leaves you scarred.
Ours wasn’t due to flood plains but I have never understood why they allow building on them. The clue is literally in the name 😡

The new estate next to us is on land that flooded regularly and was 3 metres lower. They added what looked like ballast waste to build the land up to 3 metres higher than our houses - much to everyone’s horror. They made a steep hill up to the new homes, the steep slope about 100m long and in one part the foundations of the new houses are level with the rooves of the houses which already exist.

They were then forced to put in flood mitigation which includes large emergency collection tanks under the car parks, pumping stations and greenways and large grassed areas for the water to soak away and form retention ponds like in Florida It delayed the development by a couple of years while they did this. It was interesting the other day that the highest part of the new estate had fountains (smelled like sewage) coming out of the grid in the centre of the road at which then flowed down into the latest phase. We stayed dry.

My DD was flooded (Warrington) fortunately not too much damage. Needs new flooring downstairs and the settee is ruined but she took most things upstairs. Seeing other households was devastating though... I had to wade through flood water knee high to get to her house.
