I have a Lenovo Yoga with an i5 processor - good machine. An Acer or HP with the same will come in within budget. The Acer has more memory and a bigger screen - brought mine from Currys/PC World and a little over your budget but on recommendation.
And for software (if you don't have a family Office package he can tap into) shop around - I got my virus and full 12 month office suite for £50 from Argos). Edited at 12:20 AM. |

A lot of unis allow you to download Office for free for the duration of their course so check that out before buying that.
Theres a million laptops out there but I'd be looking for something light, around 13 or 14 inch screen, etc..

My daughter had her laptop for uni delivered yesterday from Ebuyer. She wanted one that would be suitable for gaming but we gave her a £500 budget which she said would be impossible to get a gaming laptop for, so she was willing to pay extra herself.
She found a Medion gaming laptop on Ebuyer for £520 (it was £570-690 on other websites) and was delivered free the next day. I’m not very tech-minded but it looks a really nice machine and isn’t too heavy. She’s very happy with it and it runs her games well too 😀 |

Have a look at a Chromebook, they are used a lot in education along with Google G suite for the application side.
HP, Samsung, Asus, Acer etc all make Chrome Books. |
