newbie - minimum buy from Disney direct
Hi all
We had our DVC presentation earlier this week. I'd been looking into the DVC for a while and found viewing the rooms very useful. We'd also been over to OKW and looked around a 1 bed villa before that as we liked the idea of the bigger rooms. Having read some very helpful threads on here I have a question which I apologise if has been asked before... If we were to buy the majority of our points on the resale market, what is the minimum points we could then buy from Disney direct to get the "add ons"? I know your first purchase of points is 100 from Disney, but I'm not sure if we already own resale points this reduces? I see little point paying over the odds for the add-ons which are not guaranteed, but would like them all the same! My thought is that we would buy the Disney points for a different resort giving us two home resorts... surprisingly this was recommended by the Disney rep and makes good sense to me as it seems to be getting harder to book accommodation. many thanks

Minimum is 25 points once you already own. I would definitely recommend resale first.

Your home resort only works for those points that are linked to it.
So if you had 150 at SSR and 25 at Bay Lake. You couldn't book a 175 point trip to bay lake at 11 months |

Oh this is interesting... are you sure - this certainly isn't how the Disney rep explained it... as otherwise there would be no point buying the 25 points surely?

Each home resort can be booked with the points connected to those resorts at 11 months and then any other resort at 7 months.

So if I had 200 for OKW but needed 225 for the stay I had planned I couldn't use say 25 points for SSR to make up the difference at 11 months out? Only at the 7 month window?

Yes, only at the seven month window. But your plan of buying the majority of your points resale is very sensible - you'll save a mint. (I assume you meant 200 not 2000 at OKW btw).

When will you travel and what type if room?
OKW even though you like the resort (so do I) may not be the best resale option. You can normally get that at 7 months. Saratoga has a much longer end date. You can buy 25 point direct add on for any resort so you are normally best selecting the resort on your main contract so you could pool the points at 11 months if you wanted to. Think though- do you really need the perks. Really it's only worth spending the extra if you'd buy annual passes. Just think, if you didn't get your 25 point add on you could just buy a 50 point bigger contract than you were going to. Suspect those 25 extra points would have much more real world value than perks. |

25 is the minimum if you a) already own points, either direct or resale and b) if you are paying cash and not financing.
