Car Hire from Canada to USA but one way only

Next summer we are looking at doing a 3 week road trip from Calgary to San Diego for our 30th wedding anniversary. It was only supposed to be Seattle to San Diego but due to our aborted trip to Canada this year we have amended/added to it.

However the main problem I am having is car hire, no one seems able to let me hire a car in Canada and return it in the US. So wondered if anyone here can help. Otherwise at the moment I am looking at Calgary to Vancouver car hire, Vancouver to Seattle on the Amtrak Cascades and then hire a care in Seattle to San Diego. While that isn't the end of the world we are concerned about luggage as we will have 2 large cases with us that the Amtrak site seems to say we can't take with us. Not sure if flying might be a viable option, any help/info will be much appreciated

I would guess that the issue with that kind of car hire is that the hiring depot in Canada would virtually 'writing off' that vehicle from its available fleet, because it's not coming back from SoCal is it?

Not sure why you think you can't bring your cases on the train. You are allowed 2 personal items and two bags up to 23 kgs for free. Additional or oversize bags cost $20 each

That's what I thought, but hoped someone might know of a company that did do it

Actually think the train journey might be a nice break, it also means we don't have to worry about parking in the 2 most expensive cities (Vancouver and Seattle)! Have also heard that gettting through the border can take a while.

Where did you see this? We just saw a bit that said "no checked baggage"

Did the Amtrak Cascades this year with 2 large suitcases. It's fine, you check them in first and then get your seat numbers. be there early!

Have you tried doing 2 car hire bookings? Calgary to Seattle and Seattle to San Diego. I would imagine car hire firms would easily have other customers doing the same journey in reverse from Seattle
