I would say Chester, great for shopping, lovely architecture and the river. Also Cheshire Oaks, not far away. Chester Zoo is also a great day out.

Leeds? great shopping, restaurants and bars. There is also the Royal Armouries, Leeds city museum and there’s tons of parks, all only a bus ride away.
Only 18 minutes on the train York. Bus to Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon from the town center.

Lots of votes for York. Wasnt to keen on it. Surprising no one has said Norwich, really enjoyed our weekend there. As for Glasgow my favourite especially when Rangers are at home.

We went to York last year and we loved it, there were lots of young parties but we didn't feel intimidated at all, everyone was veey happy, that was a bank holiday race weekend. We have just literally come back from Bath after a 10 year gap when we could quite happily have said it was our best short break ever. Unfortunately not so much now, I did feel quite intimidated at times, mostly in the evening, we felt it had gone downhill a lot in 10 years. The place is undoubtedly beautiful but some of its residents are not so much. Our opinion which is of course subjective. I want to try Canterbury next.

Cambridge has some lovely old college buildings and nice small shopping centre. Probably an overnighter rather than a long weekend.
