Actually Elodie, I've just realised VAT on holidays may not be 20%, it could be a different rate. Check that online with a bit of research and amend the sum. So if say it is 17.5% (which it isn't but for the example) then substitute 0.175 for the 0.20. If it's 5% then it's 0.05 you want etc.

That calculation isn't correct. When working backwards, you divide the total by 1.2. This gives you the figure before 20% VAT is applied. The difference between the total, and the figure just calculated is your VAT amount.

So, in DisneyF1rstT1me's example of £1,000, it would work like this:

£1,000/1.2 = £833.33 (pre VAT amount)
£1,000-£833.33 = £166.67 (this is the VAT amount)

You can double check the calculation, by working out 20% of the pre VAT amount. In this example:

£833.33 X 0.20 = £166.67 (matches the VAT amount above)
£833.33 + £166.67 = £1,000

If you just worked out 20% of £1,000, you get £800 as the pre-VAT amount. But that's not right as 20% of £1,000, is just that. It's not 20% of the pre-VAT amount. So to work it back again, if you had therefore calculated that £800 was the pre-VAT amount, 20% of £800 is actually £160. Add the two together and you only get £960, so you see it doesn't match back up to the full £1,000. I hope that makes sense.

It's all academic though, as my Quidco tracked and it tracked at the FULL amount (including VAT). So I would just enter the full amount in any claim.

Sorry, you're absolutely right - I forgot it's always a 1 before the decimal point. I hope you've not already done your claim Elodie and relied on my explanation. Can't believe I made that mistake - I regularly have to calculate pre-VAT amounts for work 😳

Oh no, I have! What do I do now? Can I edit my claim?

I didn’t see your message about checking the figures (in any event, I’d been trying to google VAT on holidays before I asked on here, and kept seeing answers like “it’s complicated” and “it depends on x, y and z” so google was no help at all!)

Anyway, I worked mine out by multiplying the cost by 0.8 (to simplify the calculation above), and I should have been dividing by 1.2? So VAT is exactly 20% on holidays? Is that right? (In which case I can’t understand why all the answers on google say it’s some complicated formula! Why can’t they just say it’s 20%, then people would know what they were doing?)

Anyway, the claim should have been £169.20 more than I actually put. I suppose at least I under-claimed rather than over-claiming, so hopefully they will realise I wasn’t deliberately giving the wrong information!

Oh no, sorry Elodie!

I don't know what the"right" thing to do is but I reckon your choices are:

1. Do nothing. 4% of the missing amount is only about £6-7.

2. Submit a new claim with the correct calculation.

3. Contact Quidco live chat - they'll tell you what to do and they'll email you the live chat transcript afterwards so you'll have proof of what advice was given should you need it down the line.

3 would be my preferred option. Sorry again and hope you get it sorted.

It’s all sorted, I had to head out on the school run so couldn’t update earlier, but I’d got straight onto live chat and they changed the amount for me within 5 mins of me posting my panic on here! Glad they’ve got such good customer support as I was panicking that they’d just deny my claim for not matching their records.

Now just got to hope the actual claim gets sorted, but I’ve done everything I can from my end.

i've had no issue so far this time - infact I changed our booking the day after I originally booked to a more expensive hotel and the updated price now shows on quidco too. I havent worked out the % to see if its 3 or 4 its tracked at , but I had that issue in 2017 - said 4% but only tracked at 3% and after a claim they refused to change it so only got the 3%. The $100 gift card is on my invoice too - just hoping they dont refuse the quidco cashback for that $100

Mine took 10 months last year if that’s any consolation.
