Car hire
Hi Can anyone tell me if it’s cheaper to car hire on the day at the counter in the US with Alamo, or pre book in the UK before we leave. We have always pre booked but just wondering if it’s cheaper on the day? Thanks

Tends to be expensive on the day since theres no competition and no reason for them to discount the prices down.

OP. I know this is an old scenario and it actually didn't cost me anything as the Insurer paid.
3 week booking with Alamo for a Luxury car cost me X amount. My Son had an emergency operation to have his appendix out right at the end of the Holiday. Car was returned at end of rental period and I hired a small dog from Dollar that cost nearly as much for 6 days as the 3 week rental was!

Just to add to Andy and Tom's observations.
I'd guess that 95% of "walk ups" to the car hire desks without a booking would be USA residents. I'm led to believe from regular USA Dibbers that their car insurance will already cover hiring a car. Apart from being a captive audience when you rock up at the desk getting the important insurances would be possible but frighteningly expensive. You need CDW with no excess and $1m SLI which Andy and other reputable UK brokers will include in their quotes. Mick
