Iceland's Rang-tan ad - too political for TV?

I was watching this today.

I understand it has been banned as too political for TV - what do you think? Should there be space for this sort of thing - and if so, where do you draw the line?

I loved the advert..
If a company wants spend money making an ethical statement I don't see why not...Charities are allowed to show adverts of starving children and cancer treatments so I don't personally see the problem.

It's not the message or the content that has been banned for being political. It's because it was created by Greenpeace originally and not iceland and rules say they have to make the audience aware that it's made by a political group.

I agree and thought the ad itself is great. They are making an ethical statement and putting their money where their mouth is rather than the gross over commercialisation of Christmas that other companies are doing with their ads.

I think the problem with this isn't so much as the nature of the SD or its contents but who is was made by?

It was shown to me by a young teen who thought they should share as it was an important message. I agree - it also shows how important social media is over mainstream TV for advertising / messaging.

I love the advert. Think it’s a great advert and people should be aware.

However, it’s not a Christmas advert and shouldn’t be being used as one.

Lets just face it Iceland knew what they were doing. They have everyone talking , lots of publicity and are creating a great talking point and removing palm oil prom their products.
Overall very successful the message is 'louder' and publicity has been 'greater' overall a win win.

Just to clarify if they had said green peace had made it would then it have been allowed ?

From the BBC

In the case of the Iceland ad, Clearcast looked at the rule which says adverts breach the law if it is "inserted by or on behalf of a body whose objects are wholly or mainly of a political nature".
Clearcast said Greenpeace had to show it wasn't a "political advertiser" before the ad could be approved - but wasn't able to do that.

I think so as greenpeace broadcast it last year fine. Plus I'm not sure all of iceland products are palm oil free. I think it's a good marketing ploy for iceland!
