There are also a small minority who will have a passport that does have 6 months validity but is over 10 years old, depending on when their last passport was renewed. It is those that *might* not be valid in a no deal situation

What about children passports as they would have a validity of 5 years plus x months - which is less than the 10 years? Will the extra months be valid if it doesn't go over 10 years?

The article is about needing to renew before tomorrow to guarantee getting the new passport back before Mar 29th. You can still apply after this date, but the passport may not be with you until after the Mar 29th date. If you aren't holidaying on the continent until later, dont panic.

How does this work with travel to the US? Do we have a deal that allows up to 9 months over the 10years based on renewal to be accepted and this is only a problem in the EU because it's not in any agreement (no deal)?

Exactly ... US travel is unchanged as it has nothing to do with Brexit

We needed to renew ours a month or so ago and was panicked with the brexit scaremongering and couldn’t believe how quick it was, literally a few days it took!

The need to redo a passport today is predicated on the assumption that new passports will take 3 weeks. Many have been taking under that if done online. But if course the numbers increasing as a result of this panic put about by the media isn't helpful.

Have you checked the link to see if you Def need to renew before you go to the EU. Apologies if you have, but quite often there is only half info in the press.

How long after you get back from the stars do you go to Europe? Is there time to do it afterwards if necessary (as all this is based on a presumption that there will be a no deal brexit. If there is an extension or a deal then the requirements for renewal may be as currently, or different again?

This thread from yesterday has the link to check passport validity for Europe.
