Run out of cars

Just read a thread on another forum from an american who arrived at 22:30 into MCO and the car hire company had run out of cars! Obviously most UK flights arrive earlier so less likely to be an issue but shown how much of their fleet that companies must have sold off during the pandemic.

I'd be interested in hearing how that was solved / what happened. It's obviously not acceptable that you don't get what you've paid for, so they must have some provision/plans in place for if/when such a thing happens?

"I rented a car with Thrifty. I called ahead to make sure they had cars and my reservation. I called again this evening. I was assured they had cars. Our plane landed at 10:35 pm. There were about 300 people in line. They processed about 150. Then stopped. They called the police. They wanted the police there to make an announcement that they ran out of cars. We called Uber 12:15am. I made a new reservation with a different company for in the morning. Glad I have a few days to spare."

I am surprised by that response. Thrifty is owned by Hertz and its sister company is Dollar. With all of those resources available within the same group you would think that they would have a better contingency plan in place than just to call the police.

Yeah, that all sounds a bit strange. Also, they surely would have been aware that they didn’t have enough cars given the bookings for the day; and it’s not like this was out by a couple of cars.

I guess without multiple sources to confirm what actually happened, it’s a bit anecdotal.

Hertz are in Chapter 11, all of the hire companies reduced their inventory last year to reduce costs.
Now, tgeyvare having difficulties getting replacement xars as manufacturers are not building at previous rates and a shortage of semi conductor chips.

The thought is this will continue all year

Absolutely this. Prices are sky high and cars are literally like gold dust.

They sold the cars off last year at this time for peanuts (we bought one) and now people are flocking in droves to Florida and they don’t have the amount of cars required and they can’t get the manufacturers to make them fast enough.

If you have booked a car through BA and the garage can't honour it, I hope that BA will then foot the bill if you manage to hire elsewhere!

I’m not sure I understand (and am perhaps a bit naive) but surely if 300 people expected a car it was because they had allowed 300 cars to be reserved?
