Virgin car rental - insurance options

Hi all,

Is it worth the extra ££££ that Virgin want for the higher insurance cover or is the basic enough?

Thanks,
Gav

Never hired through Virgin but I would strongly advise against taking their basic insurance.

First of all no CDW and, even more importantly, only $30k third party liability instead of $1m. Injure someone in a crash and $30k might cover a Band Aid or two. Hello bankruptcy.

OP. Alamo wont actually let you drive the car out on the 'basic' Insurance from Virgin as their asset is not protected.

Have you booked yet? Is it a Fly Drive?

Reason I ask is VA offer flight + car and that car is full Insured and can be booked right through 2022 even though their flights only can't be booked yet. Worth a thought.

If it's a Holiday from VH I would ditch the free car and shop around for a deal. Possibly even with VA!

Yes that's their supplier of cars in America. Some very good prices especially for a stand alone hire.

Looking at a fly drive. I take it fully insured to the hilt is the way to go?

Absolutely. Not the Country to take a risk in. Certain things aren't needed in my view such as Uninsured Motorist Protection as it's not your car. Also Contents Insurance and Personal Injury Insurance is a waste of money as that's what your Travel Insurance is for.

Thanks for the advice both!

I’ve actually booked a fly drive package and thought I was smart by only selecting the basic option to save some money.. silly mistake! 😂

Luckily I have the option to upgrade the insurance which I’ll do ASAP.

In regards to booking car separate, I’ve looked around and so far the deal I’ve got suits us really well so I just need to look at only upgrading the insurance for now!

How strange... last 2 times we have been with VH, we have taken the basic insurance and taken CDW/SLI with a 3rd party, and they have never checked or asked at the desk or or the gate as you exit.
