If you can get out of the Orlando for the day, you'd be better off crowd-wise. The beaches will be packed, but I like your idea for going to the Space Center. Most of us will just have BBQs and go swimming. It's just too darn hot to do much else. I have been to the MK on the 4th and I am not one much for crowds. They may even hit capacity so park hopping is pretty much out after that. Also, wherever you decide to go, check and make sure they aren't on Holiday hours. The main parks will be normal, but many restaurants ad shops will have shortened hours. Have fun regardless of what you choose to do!

We also are there for 4th July this year and are planning on going to a Water park early and then have dinner booked at Gaylord Palms.
On previous visit did Discovery Cove and agree with others that it is ideal as limited numbers. Only problem was finding somewhere for dinner when we left!

We were staying at the Daniel Webster hotel on Main Street and saw the crowds (well not quite MK parade crowd numbers ) gathering outside.

We joined them and started talking to the locals and they gave us stars & stripes to wave . A bit odd really as they were celebrating independence from us but they were all very welcoming.

Can anyone recommend some fastpass locations in Magic Kingdom that day to get preferred viewing for the fireworks?

Don't think I could be bothered about magic kingdom when it's so busy.
Celebration is going to be packed too.
