We've always tipped 20% thinking that was the right thing to do.
We visited my Dad this year though who has lived in Indiana for over 20years and his wife is American. They were shocked at the amount we tipped and certainly for buffet restaurants.
They said for buffets that 10% is the usual rate.

I must admit we've always tipped the same regardless of table or buffet on our trips to the US. The amount of work for buffet staff is probably more, and for some reason I expect them to be paid less.

we have always tipped the recommended, 18 or 20 %

but speaking to a American in a store about tipping, he laughed his hed of at the 18 or 20 %, he found it hilarious, then we watched other families tip, and for instance in Boma a family of 4 left a $10 tip

made us think

How does this work if you're on DDP? For example, could I still pay for the tip in cash? For groups of 6 or more.

You sure can. You can choose how you pay the tips. Card, Gift Card, Cash, Magic Band.

Our last trip we paid all tips in cash but this year there are 13 of us split into 3 families... Maths is fun!

Just ask for three separate bills, they don't mind doing this.

Me too - American couple on the table next to us at Narcoossee's had a little discussion about the tip and agreed with each other that $10 was fine.

Last trip a couple of months ago we paid all extras and tips in cash but sometimes the paperwork was very confusing.

Twice stuff also got charged to our room - in one case they said straight away but it took some time to sort it out. In the other case we didn't notice until we got home, but Disney corrected it straight away when I queried it by email.
